UN launches road safety campaign in US, to halve number of victims by 2030

The United Nations on Monday launched its global road safety campaign in the United States, which aims to halve the number of road-related victims worldwide by 2030. The two-year advertising campaign seeks to educate people on basic, but life-saving, safety measures, such as wearing seatbelts and helmets and putting away phones on the road, UN Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt told a news conference opening the US campaign. The advertisements will appear on JCDecaux billboards in more than 80 countries and 1,000 cities, including New York City, Chicago, and Boston starting Monday, said Jean-Luc Decaux, president and co-CEO of JCDecaux North America. He said the campaign underscores how the media's reach can raise awareness to save lives and further the message of international road safety. The #MakeASafetyStatement campaign is part of the UN New Decade of Action for Road Safety, which launched in 2021. More than one million people die in road-related fatalities annually, over

The World Health Organisation has come up with two guidelines for policymakers on helmet use and pedestrian safety to help curb the global scourge of road traffic deaths and injuries. The guidelines, co-written by experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), on the use of helmets for riders of powered two and three-wheelers and on pedestrian safety, include new evidence and case studies. Maruti Suzuki to spread awareness about safety features: Senior official

Country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki will spread awareness about the safety features and address the issues also through its driving schools, a senior company official said on Wednesday. After the tragic death of former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry in a road accident, Maruti will focus on the need to put on rear safety belts which had been made compulsory by regulation but very few riders adhere to it, the official said. "Wearing rear seat belts is compulsory by regulation but riders don't pay heed to it. In the case of front seat belts, only 23 per cent of the riders wear it. It is important to keep passive, active and behavioural safety measures in mind", senior executive director Maruti Suzuki Shashank Srivastava told reporters here. As a part of Maruti's CSR initiative, the company had installed speed cameras in Delhi. Maruti will take a drive to spread it to other cities, he added.
