Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday announced a grant of Rs 35 crore for upgrading and modernising zonal training centres of the Railway Protection Force, the Railway Ministry said. Special focus will be on facilities for women personnel at the training centres, said Railway Minister Vaishnaw at the 40th Raising Day Parade of the RPF in Nasik. An additional grant of Rs 5.5 crore was sanctioned for the zonal training centre for the RPF dog squad in Tamil Nadu, aimed at strengthening the specialised training infrastructure, the ministry said in a statement. During the event, the Union minister felicitated 33 RPF personnel who were awarded the prestigious police medals for meritorious service and Jeevan Raksha medals for their courageous efforts in saving passengers' lives during 2023 and 2024," it said. The awards reflect the exemplary service of the RPF in safeguarding the nation's railway network and are set to inspire other members of the force to continue their dedicated .

The Railway Protection Force's women personnel went out of their way to help pregnant women in labour during their train journeys and assisted in 206 childbirths, the Railways said on Monday. According to the national transporter, the RPF, which has the largest share of women personnel in its ranks among the central forces, runs Operation Matrishakti, which provides help to pregnant women in childbirth. Releasing the achievements of RPF and its various operations and campaigns during 2023, the railways said under operation "Rail Suraksha" to safeguard rail property, the force registered 6,312 cases of theft in which recovery of stolen railway property worth Rs 12.48 crore was made with the arrest of 12,099 offenders. A court here on Saturday denied bail to dismissed Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable Chetansinh Chaudhary, accused of shooting dead his senior colleague and three passengers on a moving train in July this year, by stating he was in a "well settled position and mind" at the time of crime. His bail was rejected by Additional Sessions Judge (Dindoshi Court) AZ Khan who held the offence was serious. Chaudhary not only killed his senior but also three others of a "particular community" by making them specific targets, the court said. The accused uttered words which clearly show "he was in a well settled position and mind to commit murder of people belonging to a specific community", the court said while rejecting his bail plea. Over 720 children and women have been rescued by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) from April to December last year, a senior official said here. Ten human traffickers have also been arrested by the RPF during the period, he said. "During the period from April to December 2022, RPF of NF Railway rescued 686 minor children and 39 women, besides arrest of 10 human traffickers," NFR chief spokesperson Sabyasachi De said.
