Travel firm Thomas Cook India partners with NPCI to launch RuPay forex card

Travel services provider Thomas Cook (India) on Tuesday said it has collaborated with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to launch its first RuPay prepaid forex card for Indian travellers visiting the UAE. The partnership commences with the UAE as a pilot, which will be followed by a global rollout in a phased manner, Thomas Cook said in a statement. Travellers can use Thomas Cook's RuPay AED (United Arab Emirates Dirham) card extensively across the UAE for transactions and ATM withdrawals. The company claimed that it is the first and the only company to have partnered with NPCI to launch RuPay AED prepaid forex card. "This innovative Made-in-India initiative is a first-of-its-kind partnership with an Indian non-banking entity," Thomas Cook (India) Executive Vice-President - Foreign Exchange, Deepesh Varma said. Maldives to launch India's RuPay service amid turbulence in bilateral ties

Notwithstanding the turbulence in their bilateral ties, the Maldives will soon launch India's RuPay service, which a senior minister has said "will bolster the Maldivian Rufiyaa." RuPay, a product of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is the first of its global card payment network in India, with wide acceptance at ATMs, POS devices, and e-commerce websites across India. More than 50.09 crore accounts have been opened under the PM Jan Dhan Yojana in the last nine years and the deposit balance swelled to over Rs 2.03 lakh crore, the Finance Ministry said on Saturday. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched on August 28, 2014, with the aim to provide universal banking services through the opening of zero-balance bank accounts for every unbanked household, based on the guiding principles of banking the unbanked, securing the unsecured and funding the unfunded. Financial Services Secretary Vivek Joshi said 33.98 crore RuPay cards were issued to PMJDY account holders as of August 2023, up from 13 crore at the end of March 2015. "Currently there are 225 crore bank accounts in the country. The data shows that many people have more than one bank account. India, Russia explore using RuPay and Mir cards for easy payments

India and Russia will explore the possibility of accepting RuPay and Mir cards in each other's country for hassle-free payments amid sanctions imposed by the West on Moscow. In the recent high level Internal Governmental Commission meeting on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), it was discussed and agreed to explore the opportunity of allowing acceptance of these cards, sources said. The mutual acceptance of RuPay (India) and Mir cards (Russia) will help Indian and Russian citizens to make hassle-free payments in Indian rupees and Russian ruble in their respective countries, sources said.
