Tata's semiconductor unit in Assam to be gamechanger for NE: CM Himanta

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor plant approved for the state by the Union Cabinet on Thursday will be a game-changer for the economy of the entire North East region. The plant will trigger a new Industry 4.0 revolution in the state, he added. The Union Cabinet approved setting up three semiconductor-making units at an investment of Rs 1.26 lakh-crore as part of an attempt to cut India's dependence on imports to meet requirements of chips, of which one will be in Assam. Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) will set up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, at an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. It will have a capacity of 48 million chips per day for automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones. India has made significant strides in the semiconductor sector in the last two years during which the government received investment proposals of Rs 2.50 lakh crore from global chip makers, Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said. In the last 10 years, India has moved out of the league of 'Fragile Five' and become the world's fifth largest economy, the Minister of State for Electronics & Technology said. Speaking at the 'Viksit Bharat Ambassador Meet' organised in Pune on Wednesday, Chandrasekhar said India has become a source of inspiration for countries across the world in terms of its inclusive policies. India has made significant strides in the semiconductor sector in the last two years and during this period, Rs 2.50 lakh crore worth of investment proposals have been received by the government from global chip makers, said Union Minister of State for Electronics & Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Wednesday. Taiwan's TSMC opens its first plant in Japan as part of global expansion

Chip giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. opened Saturday in an official ceremony its first semiconductor plant in Japan as part of its ongoing global expansion. We are deeply grateful for the seamless support provided by you at every step, TSMC Chairman Mark Liu said after thanking the Japanese government, local community and business partners, including electronic giant Sony and auto-parts maker Denso. Two multi-billion dollar semiconductor plants to come up in India: MoS IT

Two full-fledged semiconductor fabrication plants are going to come up in India very soon entailing multi-billion dollar investment besides several chip assembly and packaging units, Minister of Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said. In an interview with PTI, the minister confirmed that the two projects include a USD 8 billion proposal submitted by Israel-based Tower Semiconductors and the other from Tata Group. "I am happy to share this with you and you are probably the first one I'm sharing this with. In the near term, two full-blown fabs are going to come up in India. These are going to be multi-billion-dollar fabs in the 65, 40 and 28-nanometer technology and there are going to be a host of other packaging proposals that we are evaluating," Chandrasekhar said.
