Shakib unlikely to travel to Bangladesh for his final Test due to protests

Bangladesh's premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is unlikely to travel to his native country for his final Test match, against South Africa in Mirpur, Dhaka from October 21-25, due to protests against him in the city. Shakib was included in the Bangladesh squad for the first Test against the Proteas, which was going to be his final appearance in the format. "I am not sure where I am going next, but it is almost sure that I am not going home," Shakib told ESPNcricinfo. Shakib had been apprehensive about returning to Bangladesh because of concerns about his family's safety. Besides being a star cricketer, Shakib is an ex-lawmaker in the government ousted by a revolution in August. The 37-year-old announced his retirement from international cricket last month but said that he wanted to play one last Test series at home, following which he was included in the squad for the two Tests against South Africa. He was one of 147 people named in an FIR for an alleged murder during the ...

Shakib set for Test farewell at home, part of Bangladesh squad vs SA

Shakib Al Hasan is set for his last appearance in Test cricket in front of the home crowd as the venerable all-rounder was named in Bangladesh's squad for the first match against South Africa, starting here on Monday. Before the second and final Test against India at Kanpur, Shakib had expressed his wish to play his final Test at home against South Africa, provided the Bangladesh Cricket Board was able to ensure his safety. Khaled Ahmed is the only omission from the squad that recently toured India. Shakib has been accused of being involved in the murder of a student but the Bangladesh veteran was taking part in a T20 league in Canada at the time of the incident. However, Faruque Ahmed, the new president of the BCB had rejected Shakib's request saying the board was not a security agency and could not guarantee any cover for him. The sports advisor to Bangladesh's interim government Asif Mahmud said that Shakib would be provided security once his political stance was clear. Shakib

Shakib apologizes for 'silence' during civil unrest, home farewell on cards

Bangladesh cricket great Shakib Al Hasan has tendered an unconditional apology for his "silence" during the recent civil unrest against ousted PM Sheikh Hasina, a move that might clear the decks for a farewell Test match at home against South Africa. He is targetting the opening Test starting October 21 in Mirpur as his swansong. There is a second Test in Chittagong but it is believed that Shakib will play the first game and then fly off to the USA, where he is settled with his wife and three children. "Firstly, I would like to pay my respects to all the students who sacrificed their lives, led the anti-discrimination movement, and were martyred or injured during the people's uprising," Shakib, who has been named as an accused in a murder case in Bangladesh, wrote on his official Facebook page. "While no sacrifice can compensate for the loss of a loved one, nothing can fill the void of losing a child or a brother, to those of you who were hurt by my silence during this critical ...

IND vs BAN: Shakib Al Hasan - Bangladesh's grossly misunderstood maverick

Wanting to be Anil Kapoor's 'Nayak' for a day to change everything that's wrong with BPL, sending stumps cartwheeling in disgust with a left-footed pile driver or pushing the envelope of 'Spirit of Cricket' by getting a player 'Timed Out', Shakib Al Hasan was perhaps never in running for winning game's "Mr Congeniality" contest. But when it comes to cricketing pedigree, his 14,271 international runs with 14 hundreds, 708 wickets and 119 catches across 446 international games in last 17 years, puts him on a pedestal which will be difficult to surpass for Bangladeshi cricketers of coming generations as he gets ready to bid adieu to international cricket. In 50 overs cricket especially where Bangladesh as a team found its mojo, he was peerless with 7,500 plus runs and 300 plus scalps. For Indian fans of certain vintage, his patient half-century at Port of Spain in the 2007 ODI World Cup hurts as much as Tamim Iqbal's six that hit the top tier concrete of the stadium. There can't be ...

Shakib Al Hasan's security is not in board's hand: BCB chief Faruque Ahmed

Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan's hopes of returning home have hit a roadblock with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed making it clear that the board cannot not ensure a personal security cover due to the ongoing case against him. The 37-year-old, who on Thursday announced his retirement from T20 Internationals with immediate effect, had expressed his desire to play his farewell match against South Africa at home in October if he is assured of safety on return to Bangladesh. "Shakib's security is not in the board's hand. The board can't provide an individual with personal security. He has to take a decision on that. His security has to come from the highest level of the government," Bangladeshi news outlets quoted Faruque as saying. "BCB is not a security agency like the police or RAB (Rapid Action Battalion). We haven't spoken to anyone (in the government) about him. Since his case is a sub-judice matter, so we can't really do much about it." Shakib was named

Mushfiqur, Mehidy help Bangladesh take 94 runs lead against Pakistan

Mushfiqur Rahim dug in to score a superb 191 and share a record stand with Mehidy Hasan Miraz as Bangladesh nullified Pakistan's pace attack in the first test on Saturday. Mushfiqur's 11th test hundred, and first against Pakistan, came in more than 8-1/2 hours and lifted Bangladesh to 565 all out on Day 4. It was Bangladesh's third highest score away from home, as Pakistan's ploy to go with four fast bowlers failed to work on a greenish wicket that eased considerably for batting. Pakistan, which made 448-6 declared in its first innings, lost opener Saim Ayub early in its second and was 23-1 at stumps, trailing by 94 runs. Abdullah Shafique was not out on 12 while captain Shan Masood was unbeaten on 9. Mushfiqur's marathon 341-ball knock, featuring 22 fours and a six, ended in the final session when he attempted a square cut against Khurram Shahzad's good-length delivery and was caught behind. Mushfiqur and No. 8 Mehidy, who scored 77, made the four fast bowlers toil under hot and

Centuries from Rizwan and Shakeel help Pakistan go past 400 in first Test

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan and vice-captain Saud Shakeel struck centuries as they guided the home team past 400 for the loss of six wickets on the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh on Thursday. Rizwan was the more aggressive of the two batters and is unbeaten past 150 with 11 fours and three sixes, while left-handed Shakeel, resuming on 57, was dismissed on 141. The batters stretched their overnight fourth-wicket stand to 240. Resuming on 158 for four, Bangladesh pace bowlers couldn't trouble the overnight Pakistan batting pair on a greenish wicket before captain Najmul Hassan Shanto went to his spinners in the latter half of the first session, but still couldn't find the breakthrough. Rizwan and Shakeel compiled 48 runs in the first hour. Bangladesh pacers couldn't extract lateral movement, which saw Pakistan slipping to 16 for three on the opening day and curtailed to 41 overs due to wet patches in the outfield. The two-Test series is part of the I

PAK vs BAN second test match to be played without fans in stadium

The second cricket test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Karachi starting Aug. 30 will be played without fans due to ongoing construction work at the National Bank Stadium, the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Wednesday. The PCB started renovating the stadium this month as part of its preparations for next year's Champions Trophy, which begins Feb. 19. The PCB said it has suspended ticket sales for the Karachi test with immediate effect and that fans who have already purchased tickets will receive a full refund. The health and safety of our fans is our utmost priority, the PCB said in a statement. After careful consideration of all available options, we have decided that the safest course of action is to hold the second test in front of an empty stadium. The cricket board said it wanted to make the stadium more spectator-friendly for the Champions Trophy, which will be the first ICC event hosted in Pakistan since the 1996 World Cup. The first test match will be played at ...
