The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has set up 235 pagoda tents to provide shelter to homeless individuals during cold winter nights, according to officials. According to the Delhi government's winter action plan 2024-25 launched on November 15, a total of 250 tents are to be set up. The remaining 15 tents have been reserved for an emergency. "Each tent is equipped with essential amenities such as mattresses, blankets, toilet facilities, and health checkup services, along with three meals a day," an official said "Security measures have also been taken, with three guards assigned for each tent working eight-hour shifts," he said. Three persons died and 12 others fell ill due to suspected food poisoning at a state-run shelter home in Patna, an official said on Wednesday. The incident happened at the home for differently-abled women, Asha Grih, at Patel Nagar in the Shahstri Nagar police station area, District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh told PTI. They fell ill reportedly after consuming breakfast on November 7, he said. While a 24-year-old woman died on November 7 itself at the Patna Medical College and Hospital, a nine-year-old girl lost her life on November 10 and a 12-year-old girl died on Wednesday evening, he added. The shelter home is run by the Social Welfare Department. Singh said some of those who fell ill are still undergoing treatment at the Patna Medical College and Hospital. "The exact cause of the incident is not known," he said, adding that a high-level inquiry has been ordered. Two children have died while 12 have fallen ill at a shelter home in Madhya Pradesh's Indore in the last two days, an official said on Tuesday. Karan (12) and Akash (7), both inmates of Bal Ashram of Shri Yugpurush Dham in the Malharganj police station area, died on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Alok Kumar Sharma said. The official said the exact cause of these deaths will be ascertained after the post-mortem reports arrive. The ashram houses more than 200 children, including orphans and those suffering from mental ailments, he said. The Mizoram government will continue to provide relief to over 42,000 people from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur who have taken shelter in the state, Home Minister K Sapdanga told the assembly on Monday. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to the Delhi government over the reported plight of the inmates of a shelter home in the Nizamuddin area here, officials said on Monday. In a statement, the NHRC said it has also asked its director general (investigation) to depute a team headed by a deputy superintendent of police to conduct an on-the-spot fact-finding investigation in the matter and submit a report to it. The commission has observed that the contents of a media report, if true, amount to a serious issue of violation of human rights of the helpless inmates. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) will conduct an awareness drive this week to inform the homeless about the facilities being provided by it under its winter action plan, officials said on Monday. Thirty volunteers have been working for rescue drives and 15 rescue vans have been deployed at several locations in the city. "There are two volunteers in each rescue van and so far, 15 such vans have been deployed across the city. We will also start another awareness drive so that more homeless people can avail the benefits we are providing under our winter action plan," DUSIB member Bipin Rai told PTI.
