Meghalaya set to attract pvt investments worth Rs 8K cr: CM Conrad Sangma

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday said Meghalaya is set to attract private investments amounting to Rs 8,000 crore in the current fiscal, attributing this to a new industrial policy aimed at transforming the state into a USD 10 billion economy. "The investment in Meghalaya is an outcome of the new industrial policy that has created an ecosystem for ease of doing business," he said while addressing a workshop on the 'Human Development Leadership Programme' in Tura. Discussing past policies that discouraged investors, Sangma noted, "The system was tedious and time-consuming. Our new industrial policy has provided a framework to give clearance to different statutory requirements within a specified time frame, which is facilitating investors". He revealed that nearly Rs 4,000 crore in investment has been secured in the past year alone. This includes a Rs 2,500-crore thermal power plant to generate 450 megawatt of electricity, an ethanol plant, a beverage manufacturing unit, and

IED blast injures 1, Shillong's Punjabi lane settlers seek Shah's help

Residents of the disputed Punjabi Lane here have sought the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah into the IED explosion in their locality on March 9, resulting in one injury. In a letter to Shah, Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) secretary Gurjit Singh said the blast has instilled a sense of fear among the residents. The Sikh community residing in the contested area believes the blast was orchestrated to disrupt negotiations aimed at relocating them to municipal land. Initiated months after the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), backed by the BJP, came to power in 2018, the relocation process is currently under the supervision of the high court. Singh emphasised to Shah that the blast undermines the peace efforts. He urged the home minister to take immediate action against those issuing threats, asserting that restoring peace requires holding troublemakers accountable. He called upon the Centre to uphold the rule of law and safeguard the rights of all citizens irrespec

Poor water quality in 44 of 46 localities of Shillong, govt to launch probe

More than 95 per cent of drinking water supplied to 46 localities of Shillong is harmful for consumption due to the presence of bacteria, high iron content and low pH value, a report of the State Food Testing Laboratory has stated. Concerned over the quality of drinking water supplied to residents of Shillong, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, a social organisation, collected water samples from the 46 localities of the city and sent those for testing on August 22. The report, which came recently, indicated that water in only two localities -- Demthring and Mawblei was safe. "The water samples showed the presence of Coliform and E. Coli, low pH value (acidic), high turbidity, and iron content above the prescribed limit indicating that the water in these localities was unsafe for drinking," an office-bearer of the organisation told PTI. Acidic water causes corrosion of pipes while high iron content has health implications and the presence of faecal coliforms in water

Shah assures CBI probe into border firing, as fresh violence hits Shillong

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has given firm assurances at a meeting held in Delhi of acting on his request for a CBI probe into the "firing by Assam Police" along the states' border.
