At Rs 27.75 crore, Rishabh Pant becomes IPL's costliest player in record-breaking 2025 auction
Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting on Sunday rated Shyreas Iyer, whom they have bought for Rs 26.75 crore in the mega auction, as the ideal choice to lead the team in IPL 2025 as the Indian batter has the experience of guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to tile earlier this year. Iyer's Rs 26.75 crore bid briefly made him the most expensive IPL player in history before his India teammate Rishabh Pant set a new benchmark with a staggering Rs 27 crore deal with Lucknow Super Giants. "I've worked with him in the past in Delhi (Capitals); he's been a successful captain in the IPL before," said Ponting in a mid-auction press meet. "Obviously, he's a championship-winning captain from last season. We've got someone there who can do the job if that's the way we decide to go," he said. The Aussie World Cup-winning captain also highlighted Iyer's stellar unbeaten 130 for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Saturday. "I'm delighted to have him back and work with him. He also got a good .

At Rs 27 crore, Rishabh Pant emerges as the costliest player in IPL history. Shreyas Iyer is the second costliest player in Indian Premier League
The IPL 2025 mega auction saw Rishabh Pant rewrite history books, eclipsing Shreyas Iyer's fleeting record as the costliest player by mere minutes.
While some teams have secured their skippers for the season, experienced captains will be in high demand at the auction, with some prominent names available in the market.
Both dynamic leaders are now set to be among the hottest names in the bidding war, after Delhi Capitals released Pant and Kolkata Knight Riders' skipper Shreyas Iyer became available for the auction.
With the deadline to submit the list of retained players on October 31, reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer is most likely to be retained by Kolkata.
Iyer is now unlikely to feature on KKR's retention list, which will be submitted to the BCCI on Thursday evening.
KKR is filled with star players, which means picking the best possible names for retention will require a lot of brainstorming by the team management.
Shreyas Iyer will miss Mumbai's third round clash in the Ranji Trophy against Tripura, to be played at Agartala's Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium from October 26-29, due to personal reasons. The right-handed batter has requested the Mumbai senior men's selection committee for some time off and his appeal has been accepted, a senior official from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed to PTI on Wednesday. The 29-year-old has featured in each of the three domestic games for Mumbai this season, which includes the heavyweights' title win in the Irani Cup after 27 years. Iyer made 57 and 8 in the clash against the Rest of India side. Iyer scored a match-winning 142 last week in the second round Ranji Trophy Group A match against Maharashtra to help Mumbai record their first victory, post which the batter claimed that he was making steady progress in terms of his fitness. "It feels special, coming back after a very long time. Obviously, I was feeling a bit down with my injuri
Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer on Saturday expressed his desire to make a comeback to the Indian Test squad, emphasising the hard work he has put into cultivating patience and resilience for the longer format after undergoing a back surgery. The 29-year-old, who had been battling a recurring back injury for which he underwent a surgery last year, scored his first century in red-ball cricket since his Test debut nearly three years ago during the Ranji Trophy second-round match against Maharashtra. His last first-class ton was against New Zealand in the Kanpur Test in November 2021. "It feels special, coming back after a very long time. Obviously, I was feeling a bit down with my injuries, but now, getting a century after a very long time, it's a great feeling overall," Iyer told reporters at the end of day's play. "I am absolutely keen for a comeback, but as we say, control the controllables, and my job is to keep performing, and keep participating as much as possible and also see to it
The under-pressure Shreyas Iyer's dismal run continued but strong performances from the other frontline batters, including Sanju Samson, guided India D to 306 for five on the opening day of their Duleep Trophy match against India B here on Thursday. Iyer, aiming to make a comeback to India's Test squad, fell for a second successive duck in the ongoing tournament. However, Devdutt Padikkal (50), Srikar Bharat (52), RickyBhui (56) and Samson (89 not out) smashed half-centuries as India D batters produced a solid show. At stumps, Samson and Saransh Jain (26) were at the crease. For India B, leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (3/60) was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets. Mukesh Kumar (1/37) and Navdeep Saini (1/51) picked up a wicket each after India B won the toss and elected to field first at the Rural Development Trust Stadium. Opening the innings, Padikkal and Bharat put together a solid 105-run partnership. However, Saini provided the breakthrough by removing Padikkal, followed b
Fringe players like Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube along with some seasoned name who have been ignored by the national selectors will be aiming to attract their attention when round two of Duleep Trophy begins here on Thursday. The star power in the season-opening red-ball event will be reduced significantly for round two with India squad players released for a national camp ahead of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai from September 19. Sarfaraz Khan is the lone India squad member who will be featuring in the domestic competition. In the absence of national regulars, the focus will shift on the likes of Rinku, who was surprisingly not picked for the first round despite having an impressive first-class record. The spirited southpaw has also done well for India in T20 cricket. Shubman Gill joining the national team has led to Mayank Agarwal captaining the India A unit. Having played his last Test in March 2022, Agarwal needs a bagful of runs to get back into national ...
When Shreyas Iyer recreated Lionel Messi's famous World Cup celebration after lifting the IPL Trophy as Kolkata Knight Riders captain in Chennai, it was nothing short of an Argentina moment for the embattled Indian cricketer at an individual level. His central contract torn up a few weeks before the IPL besides a recurring back injury threatening to derail him, Iyer faced numerous challenges at the start of the year. He finally found a deep sense of triumph and vindication in this victory, much like Messi did after exorcising the ghosts of losing the 2014 final and winning the trophy for his country after a 36-year-wait. For the two-time IPL champions, the wait lasted 10 years as Iyer sang a redemption song following a topsy-turvy start to the year. Little wonder then that he chose to imitate the man who knows all about rising from setbacks. So, Iyer, with the trophy in his hands, took a playful walk towards his teammates, quite similar to what Messi did after the final against Fra
