Around 75 per cent of feature phone users want to shift to smartphones priced in the range of Rs 6,000-8,000, according to a report released on Friday. Poor camera quality, lack of advanced apps, and limited internet access are the key reasons triggering the need to shift feature phone users to smartphones, according the report by CyberMedia Research (CMR). CMR said it surveyed 2,000 mobile phone users across Amritsar, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, New Delhi, Kochi, Nasik, Patna, and Varanasi. "Three of four users expressed interest to switch to smartphones, primarily in the Rs 6,000-8,000 price range," the report said. The survey found that Indian feature phone users spend an average of 3 hours daily on calls (87 per cent), alarms (72 per cent), and texting (62 per cent). iPhone maker Apple led India market with highest revenue in 2023 for the first time while Samsung topped the chart in terms of sales volume, market research firm Counterpoint Research said on Wednesday. While India's smartphone shipments remained flat in 2023 at 152 million units, Samsung and Chinese mobile phone makers Vivo and Oppo were able to grow their shares, according to Counterpoint's Monthly India Smartphone Tracker report. "Apple's focus on India is also aiding the trend, with the brand surpassing the 10-million-unit mark in shipments and capturing the top position in revenue in a calendar year for the first time, propelled by robust demand for both its latest and older iPhones. The government should not cut import duties on electronic components used in making smartphones in the forthcoming Budget as the current tariff structure has already proven successful and changing them could harm local manufacturing, a GTRI report said on Monday. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that maintaining the current rates would help balance industry growth and long-term development in India's growing smartphone market. "Currently, tariffs on imported parts for smartphones in India are between 7.5 per cent and 10 per cent. The Budget should maintain these taxes. The Budget should not cut the import tariffs on parts used to make smartphones," it said, adding that the current rate of levies supports duty-free imports for making products to exports. India exported smartphones worth USD 4.67 billion in April-July this fiscal, following a multifold jump in shipments to the US, which emerged as the biggest destination for India-made devices, according to government data. The smartphone exports to the US jumped multiple times to USD 1.67 billion during the first four months of this fiscal against USD 284.6 million a year ago, the commerce ministry data showed.
