Tremors were felt in parts of Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti after a magnitude 3.2 earthquake hit the district on Monday afternoon, officials said. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 km. No reports of loss of life or property have been received so far, they said. The tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti falls in seismic zone IV, which is a high damage risk zone.

Tourists in Himachal's Spiti shifted to safer places; 650 roads closed

As many as 81 tourists stranded in Himachal Pradesh's Spiti Valley due to closure of roads after heavy snowfall have been shifted to safer places, police said on Monday. Meanwhile, over 650 roads, including five national highways, in the state remained closed for vehicular movement on Monday following several avalanches and landslides caused by incessant rain and snow for the past three days, according to the state emergency operation centre. The 81 tourists stranded in Spiti Valley in Lahaul and Spiti district were on Sunday night shifted to and accommodated in different hotels and homestays there, the police said in a statement. About 290 roads are blocked in this tribal district and several areas are without electricity for the past two days, the statement said. HP: Lahaul-Spiti village land sinks, residents seek geological survey

With nine of the 16 houses in Lindur village in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti district developing cracks due to land sinking, the residents have sought a geological survey to ascertain the reason behind the subsidence. The around 70 village residents are forced to sleep in the open as they fear their houses may collapse. Moreover, their agricultural land has also been damaged due to fissures, the villagers said. "Cracks were noticed in the periphery of the village in June/July and have widened and spread, endangering houses. Nine out of 16 houses in the village have developed cracks and four of them have been declared unsafe," Sarita, Pradhan of Goharama Gram Panchayat told PTI. IAF chopper requisitioned to airlift tourists stranded at Chandertal in HP

A helicopter from the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been requisitioned to airlift the tourists stranded at Chandertal in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh while a rescue team from Kaza has reached Kunzum Top and is just eight kilometres away from the lake, Principal Secretary, Revenue, Onkar Chand Sharma said on Tuesday. Around 300 people, mostly tourists, are stuck in camps at Chandertal, located at an altitude of 14,100 feet, following rain and snowfall in the region. "Two of them were facing breathing issues due to the high altitude and they would be airlifted," Sharma said. All the stranded people would be evacuated to safe places by Tuesday night, he said, adding that about 100 people were rescued from different places in the hill state on Monday. Flash flood in river Chandrabhaga in Lahaul, Spiti damages agriculture land

Agricultural land along the banks of river Chandrabhaga in a village in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh was damaged on Friday due to a rise in the water level following flash floods, according to the state emergency operation centre. The water level in the river was already rising for the past one week due to the melting of snow, said villagers. They added to have suffered a loss of about Rs 80,000 till now. The state has suffered a cumulative loss to the tune of Rs 242.40 crores since the onset of the monsoon on June 24. 120 villages in tribal Lahaul, Spiti districts to get 4G connectivity: BSNL

About 120 villages in tribal areas of Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts would be provided 4G connectivity and 450 km of optical fibre cable will be laid in the twin tribal districts of the state, BSNL officials said on Monday. To provide high-speed digital connectivity on fibre in tribal areas, the Himachal circle of the BSNL is executing a Rs 50 crore state-funded project allotted under Special Assistance to States for CAPEX (capital expenditure) Scheme during the year 2022-23, they added. Lagging behind Jio and Airtel, the state-run telecom service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) would roll out 5G in 2024. The network upgradation work is progressing very fast. for rolling out 4G in the entire country by 2023.
