Atletico draw to leave Barcelona even closer to title

Atletico Madrid warmed up for their Europa League clash with Arsenal by playing out a 0-0 draw with in-form Betis in La Liga, a result that left Barcelona closer still to the Spanish title. Antoine Griezmann was left out of the starting line-up by coach Diego Simeone and Atletico drew a second blank in four days, following their 3-0 defeat away at Real Sociedad on Thursday. Atletico remain second but with four games left they are 11 points behind unbeaten La Liga leaders Barcelona, who can clinch the title next weekend when they go to Deportivo. Barcelona won the Copa del Rey at Atletico's Wanda Metropolitano with a 5-0 rout of Sevilla on Saturday, but there was decidedly less drama at the same stadium 24 hours later. Saul Niguez struck the woodwork for Atletico in the second half, not long after Cristian Tello had hit the post for Betis at the other end. Griezmann came off the bench just after the hour mark, but Simeone's side could not get the breakthrough and they are four points .

James poised to show Zidane what Real are missing

Having rebooted his stuttering career at Bayern Munich, James Rodriguez has the chance to show Real Madrid exactly what they are missing when the sides meet in their Champions League semi-final, first leg on Wednesday. James has shone since quitting Real last July at the end of three often difficult seasons in Madrid for a two-year loan deal in Munich. "Both games will be special for me," James told Spanish newspaper AS before the first leg at the Allianz Arena. "I was at Real for three years, I have friends there and good memories from that time. "I'm only thinking about my team now and how we can beat Real." The Colombian had an impressive first season in the Spanish capital in the wake of a starring role for his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. However, the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as Madrid coach in January 2016 set him back, with the Frenchman not seeing James as a key part of his team. Yet, while Zidane seemed relieved to see James leave the Santiago Bernabeu, his .

Di Bartolomei tragedy casts shadow over Roma v Liverpool clash

The tragedy of former AS Roma captain Agostino Di Bartolomei will be remembered as the Italian club take on Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals this week. Di Bartolomei led his boyhood club Roma out at the Stadio Olimpico for the European Cup final against Liverpool on May 30, 1984. It should have been the highlight of his career but for 29-year-old midfielder the devastating defeat on penalties was to be the start of a tragic downfall. Ten years to the day after the loss on May 30, 1994, Di Bartolomei took his own life by firing a bullet through his heart. He had won the Italian Cup three times with AS Roma and the Serie A title in 1983. But the defeat in the European Cup final at the Stadio Olimpico was his last season with AS Roma. Phil Neal had given Liverpool a 12th-minute lead but Roma replied before the break with a Roberto Pruzzo header. Extra-time couldn't separate the two teams and so the European Cup would be decided on penalty kicks for the first time. Di ...

Neat, tidy Mirabai wanted career in archery before mentor stepped in

An obsession with being "neat, tidy and stylish" almost led her to archery, says world champion and Commonwealth Games gold-medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who feels a chance meeting with her eventual coach changed her career plans. Mirabai's story is not of somebody being spotted for prodigal talent but of someone who sought out the opportunity and the right mentor. As a 13-year-old girl from a poor family at the nondescript Nongpok Kakching village, around 20km from Manipur's capital Imphal, Mirabai decided early in her life that she would earn fame as a sportsperson. In search of a sports facility and a mentor, she travelled with a cousin to the Sports Authority of India Center at Khuman Lampak in Imphal in early 2008 and the rest is history. "All my brothers and cousins play football but they would come back home dirty after a day's play. I wanted to play a sport which is neat and clean. At first, I wanted to be an archer as they are neat and clean and stylish," Mirabai told
