UPL Sustainable Agriculture Solutions on Friday said it has signed an agreement with NSL Sugars to promote sustainable sugarcane production and promote green agriculture through optimised usage of natural resources. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NSL Sugars will indirectly add about 50,000 farmers across Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra, UPL Sustainable Agriculture Solutions (UPL SAS) said in a statement. The primary objective of this partnership is to achieve a minimum of 15 per cent increase in yield to over 5 tonnes per acre, which will help farmers earn an additional income of Rs 12,000-15,000 per acre, the statement said. This also aims at reducing input costs for farmers while promoting sustainable agri practices. This collaborative effort is expected to save about 6 lakh litres of water and 50 kg of urea per acre, thereby promoting green agriculture practices and reducing environmental impact, the company added. Cane dues of Rs 5,664 crore has been pending for payments to farmers on various sugar mills in the state for the 2022-23 crushing season, the Uttar Pradesh government said on Wednesday. "As per information till Jul 24, cane dues of Rs 5,664 of farmers are pending for payments," Cane Development Minister Lakshmi Narain Chaudhary said in a written reply in the state assembly on a question of member Ajay Kumar. He said that rules and regulations are in place to ensure payment of farmers and action is taken accordingly. He said for the pending dues, notices have been issued to sugar mills on April 21, May 19 and Jun 22 this year.

Sugar mills have paid nearly 1.04 lakh crore to cane farmers so far in the current marketing year ending September, while Rs 9,499 crore is yet to be paid, the government said on Friday. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said that payment of cane dues to farmers is a continuous process and the outstanding cane arrears are decreasing continuously during the last five years. She informed that about 99.9 per cent of cane dues up to sugar seasons 2020-21 have been cleared. "For the previous sugar season 2021-22, more than 99.9 per cent cane dues have been cleared and in the current sugar Season 2022-23, about 91.6 per cent cane dues are cleared as on July 17, 2023," the minister said. Sugar manufacturer EID Parry (India) Ltd reported a consolidated profit after tax for the quarter ending March 31, 2023 at Rs 286.90 crore, the company said on Wednesday. The company, which is a part of city-based Murugappa Group, had registered consolidated profit after tax (PAT) at Rs 428.96 crore in the corresponding quarter of previous year. For the year ending March 31, 2023, the consolidated profit after tax grew to Rs 1,827.74 crore from Rs 1,573.70 crore registered a year ago.
