Diversified firm DCM Shriram has commissioned 200 kilo litres per day distillery capacity in its sugar plant at Ajbapur, Uttar Pradesh. Now, the total capacity of the distillery business stands at 350 kilo litres per day. It had earlier commissioned a distillery in 2017-18 at Hariawan with 150 kilo litres per day capacity. The move is in line with the firm's earlier commitment of commissioning the distillery capacity in phases over 18 months to provide stability to the sugar business, the company said, adding it has invested Rs 300 crore in the expansion. "The expansion and upgradation is part of our vision to make the sugar business more robust and thereby providing full integration on molasses. Uttar Pradesh sugar mills, mostly private, owe Rs 3,600 crore in sugarcane farmers' arrears
This would be almost 15 percent higher compared to sugar production of about 8.75 MT during 2016-17 and total sugarcane payables of Rs 25,386 crore last year.
Uttar Pradesh is reportedly heading for a new record of sugar production for the 2017-18 crushing season, which begins next month.A recent study from rating agency ICRA estimates UP's production at 9.7 million tonnes for the coming season. Data compiled by the All India Sugar Trade Association showed output at 8.7 mt in UP during SS 2016-17. This indicates mills in UP would produce 11.5 per cent more sugar in the coming season or nearly four times the state's own consumption. "Domestic production for SS 2018 is likely to increase by 18-20 per cent to 24-24.5 mt, driven principally by a recovery in cane availability in Maharashtra and North Karnataka, supported by monsoons, and an expected increase in sugar production in Uttar Pradesh to a new high of around 9.7 mt.
