Japanese carmaker Honda plans to introduce three new models by the 2026-27 fiscal in India as it looks to tap growth opportunities in the robustly growing SUV segment, according to a top company executive. The company, which is present in India through a wholly-owned subsidiary, currently sells just one SUV model -- Elevate -- in the market with the other two products being Amaze and City sedans. "We plan to introduce three new models, with hybrid and electric powertrains by the 2026-27 fiscal thus expanding the company's presence in the SUV segment," Honda Cars India President and CEO Takuya Tsumura told PTI in an interaction. The new models would encompass both hybrid and battery electric powertrains, he added. The Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment now accounts for over 50 per cent of sales in close to 40 lakh domestic passenger vehicle segments. Hyundai Motor India on Monday said its sports utility vehicle portfolio accounts for 67 per cent of its overall sales, surpassing the industry average of 53 per cent. The company, which on Monday introduced a new version of its seven seater SUV Alcazar, said SUV sales continue to see an upward trend in the country. "As India's love for SUVs grows, our SUV penetration continues to grow. Presently, our SUV penetration stands at 67 per cent, far surpassing the industry average of 53 per cent," Hyundai Motor India MD Unsoo Kim told reporters here. The company's midsize SUV Creta, whose latest version was introduced earlier this year, has already surpassed the milestone of one-lakh-unit sales mark, he added. The automaker remains committed to providing sustainable and convenient mobility solutions, Kim said. The new Alcazar comes in both petrol and diesel trims. The price of petrol variants starts at Rs 14.99 lakh while that of diesel commences at Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Maruti Suzuki India on Tuesday said it has commenced export of its sports utility vehicle Fronx to Japan. The first consignment of over 1,600 vehicles left for Japan from Gujarat's Pipavav port, the country's largest carmaker said in a statement. Fronx will be the first SUV from Maruti Suzuki stable to be launched in Japan, it added. The company rolls out the model exclusively from its Gujarat plant. Fronx is the second model from Maruti Suzuki to be exported to Japan, after Baleno in 2016. Suzuki Motor Corporation, which owns around 58 per cent stake in Maruti Suzuki, plans to introduce Fronx in the Japanese market later this year. Japanese car maker Suzuki Motor Corporation on Monday said it will continue to expand SUV portfolio in India to recover its overall market share in the passenger vehicle segment. The company, which currently has around 58 per cent stake in Maruti Suzuki India, said its net sales increased by 732.6 billion yen (15.8 per cent) year-on-year to 5,374.3 billion yen for the last financial year. Operating profit increased by 115 billion yen (32.8 per cent) YoY to 465.6 billion yen. "We will continue to promote the expansion of our SUV models (in India) and aim to recover our total passenger car share," Suzuki Motor Corporation said in a statement. Currently, Maruti Suzuki sells SUV (sport utility vehicle) models like Brezza, Jimny and Grand Vitara in the domestic market.
