Mizoram incurs Rs 336.49 crore loss due to African swine fever in 2024

Mizoram suffered a loss of Rs 336.49 crore due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in 2024, officials of the state's Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department said. So far, the state has suffered Rs 896.69 crore loss due to the dreaded pig disease since 2021, they said. At least 14,950 pigs have died due to ASF and 24,177 others culled in the hilly state from January to December, 2024 according to the data provided by the department to PTI. The ASF outbreak was first reported at Lungsen village in south Mizoram's Lunglei district near the Bangladesh border on March 21, 2021 and 33,417 pigs died during that year, officials said. Additionally, 12,568 pigs were culled in 2021 as a precaution to prevent the pig disease from spreading further, they said. While 12,795 pigs died and 11,686 others were culled in 2022, last year saw a smaller toll with 1,139 deaths and 980 pigs culled, they said. The pig farmers of Mizoram suffered a loss of nearly Rs 800 crore following the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the state since 2021, the assembly was informed on Tuesday. In a written reply to a question, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister C Lalsawivunga said that 57,217 pigs died of ASF and 43,159 others were culled to prevent the spread of the disease between March 2021 and 15 August 2024. Pig farmers of the northeastern state incurred financial loss to the tune of Rs 799.68 crore during that period, he said. The minister said that 9,866 pigs have died and 17,977 others culled causing a loss of Rs 239.45 crore due to ASF between January to 15 August this year. Lalsawivunga said that the state government received financial assistance of varied amounts from the Centre from time to time to tackl the situation. Govt culls 310 pigs to contain African Swine Fever outbreak in Kerala

The Centre on Sunday said around 310 pigs have been culled in Kerala's Thrissur district after an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF). The outbreak was detected in Madakkatharan Panchayath, prompting swift action from the state's Animal Husbandry Department. Rapid Response Teams were deployed to cull and dispose of pigs within a 1 km radius of the epicentre on July 5, the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said in a statement. This marks the latest incident in the country's ongoing battle with ASF, which first appeared in the northeastern states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in May 2020. Highly contagious African Swine Fever reported in Kerala's Thrissur

An outbreak of African Swine Fever, a highly contagious and deadly swine disease that can affect both farm-raised and feral (wild) pigs, has been reported from a farm in a village in Kerala's Thrissur district, officials said on Friday. Due to the outbreak of swine fever, which can be readily transmitted from one pig to another through direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected pig, the Thrissur district collector has ordered the culling of 310 pigs at a private farm in Thrissur district's Madakkathara panchayat, they said. Former Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot tests positive for Covid-19, swine flu

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and swine flu. In a post on X, the Congress leader advised people to take care of their health in the changing season. UK health authorities log first human case of swine flu, monitoring strain

A new strain of swine flu has been detected in a person in the UK for the first time and close contacts are being monitored to determine its potential to spread among humans, the country's health authorities reported here on Monday. The UK Health Security Agency (HSA) said the virus strain found in pigs was detected in a person with mild respiratory symptoms after a routine test at a general practitioner (GP) surgery was analysed in a lab. While investigations are underway to determine the source of the infection, the close contacts of the individual who has since fully recovered are being monitored. This is the first time we have detected this virus in humans in the UK, though it is very similar to viruses that have been detected in pigs, said Dr Meera Chand, Incident Director at the UKHSA. Maharashtra reports 249 H3N2 infections, 417 H1N1 flu since Jan 1

The tally of H1N1 (swine flu) and H3N2 influenza infections reported in Maharashtra this year stands at 417 and 249, respectively, the state health department said on Tuesday. Presently 160 patients infected with flu viruses are being treated at various hospitals across the state, it said. So far this year Maharashtra has witnessed three deaths due to H1N1 and one death due to H3N1 virus infection, the report said. Three more suspected deaths including one in Pune city and another in Khadki cantonment area were reported due to the virus, but those are yet to be confirmed, it added.

Chhattisgarh logged 288 swine flu cases so far this year; one death

As many as 288 persons have tested positive for swine flu so far this year in Chhattisgarh with most of the cases reported in the last two-and-half months, health officials said on Saturday. While one death has been reported due to the H1N1 influenza virus, eight other swine flu patients died of comorbidities, they said. However, officially, only one fatality is treated as due to the H1N1 influenza virus. In view of the sudden rise in swine-flu cases, Chief Minister Bhupesh Bhupesh Baghel on Saturday directed the state health secretary to hold a meeting of health officials to review the situation and make necessary arrangements, they said.
