Tamil Nadu govt declares snake bite as notifiable disease in the state

Tamil Nadu government has declared snake bite as a notifiable disease in the state, thus making it mandatory for all government and private hospitals to report data to it for comprehensive prevention and treatment strategies like ramping up clinical infrastructure and allocation of anti-snake venom to prevent deaths. Snake bite has been declared as a notifiable disease in the state under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939. A Government Order (GO) to this effect was issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department on November 4 followed by a Gazette Notification published on November 6, a release here said on Friday. "Snake bite envenomation is an acute life-threatening medical condition. It is a preventable public health condition often faced by rural population in tropical and subtropical countries," the release said. Coordinated efforts reduced dengue mortality, spread: TN health department

Intensified and coordinated efforts in controlling the dengue virus helped to substantially reduce the mortality and spread of the vector borne disease in the state, the Tamil Nadu Health Department said on Friday. Amid the ongoing North East Monsoon, Tamil Nadu has been reporting sporadic cases of fever and dengue across the state. Following this, the Health and Family Welfare Department has intensified monitoring and surveillance efforts to contain the spread of dengue. "From January till November 5, 20,138 dengue cases have been reported in Tamil Nadu, with affected individuals recovering successfully. Unfortunately, 8 people lost their lives due to delay in seeking appropriate medical care," a release here said. Among the deceased was a six-year-old girl from Chengalpattu district. TN youth from UAE tested negative for Mpox: Health minister Subramanian

A 27-year-old native of Thiruvarur district, who had arrived from Sharjah, has tested negative for monkey pox, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said here on Saturday. A sample has, however, been sent to Pune-based National Institute of Virology to get it retested for confirmation, the minister told reporters. On October 31, upon his arrival at Tiruchirappalli airport from the UAE, during screening, he displayed fever symptoms and small skin lesions. Hence, he was taken to KAP Government Medical College Hospital. Subramanian said the returnee had been frightened and hence left for his hometown of Valangaiman in Thiruvarur district. "This treatment is for his good and in order to prevent the spread of infection," the minister said. Hence, he was brought back to the hospital by the authorities with police help and he has been receiving good treatment at the state-run facility.
