Supreme Court closes proceedings against Jaggi Vasudev's Isha Foundation

The Supreme Court on Friday closed the proceedings in a habeas corpus petition filed by a man who had alleged that his two daughters were held captive inside the premises of spiritual leader Jaggi Vasudev's Isha Foundation at Coimbatore. A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud noted that both the women were major and have stated that they were residing at the ashram voluntarily and without any coercion. A habeas corpus petition is filed seeking direction to produce before the court a person who is missing or has been illegally detained. The bench, also comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, also noted that in pursuance of its October 3 order, the police has submitted a status report before it. Hyundai submits PFR to take up modernisation of TN plant for Rs 1,500cr

Hyundai Motor India, the subsidiary of Korean auto major Hyundai, has submitted the pre-feasibility report to take up revamping and modernisation of its facility in Tamil Nadu at an outlay of Rs 1,500 crore. The expansion at the existing facility at Irungattukottai near here would create an additional 155 new jobs and the plant size would be increased to 7.21 lakh sq metre from the current 5.40 lakh sq metre. Hyundai Motor India has planned to expand the factory by adding additional 1.81 lakh sq metres of land at the factory. According to the company, it has proposed to take up revamping and modernisation of its existing manufacturing facility at Irungattukottai, Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu, As per the Pre-Feasibility Report submitted by the automaker on Thursday, the manufacturing facility is spread across an area of 538 acres and has the capacity to produce 8.50 lakh cars per annum. Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu sees heavy rainfall, dams fill rapidly

Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu experienced 'extremely heavy rainfall' resulting in the dams getting filled up fast. During the past 24 hours till 8.30 on Wednesday, the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said it observed extremely heavy rainfall in many places. The Cholavaram reservoir in neighbouring Tiruvallur district received 302.6 mm rainfall on a single day when the Northeast Monsoon commenced on October 15. The Redhills lake, near here, received 279.2 mm rainfall while Chembarambakkam obtained 85 mm, Kannankottai Thervoy Kandigai: 62, Poondi: 60, and Veeranam: 50.20 mm rainfall. The water level in the Poondi, Cholavaram, Puzhal (Redhills), Kannankottai Thervoy Kandigai, Chembarambakkam, and Veeranam reservoirs in Chennai and suburbs increased steadily, the Water Resources Department said. The combined storage in these six dams stood at 41.61 per cent (5,502.17 mcft, as increase from 4,844.20 mcft on Tuesday) with a combined inflow of 6,789 cusecs water today.

TDP office, Chandrababu Naidu residence attack cases transferred to AP CID

Andhra Pradesh DGP Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao has transferred the cases relating to the alleged attacks on the TDP office and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's residence in 2021 by YSRCP cadres to the CID, said an official on Monday. TDP and YSRCP leaders reportedly clashed outside the then opposition leader Naidu's residence at Undavalli in September 2021 while the TDP central office in Mangalagiri mandal was allegedly stormed by over 100 YSRCP leaders and cadres in October 2021. "The decision to transfer the cases to CID was taken by the DGP about two days ago. The superintendent of police (Guntur) directed us to be ready with the updated record of these two cases to hand them over to the CID," Mangalagiri sub-divisional police officer Murali Krishna told PTI. TN train collision: Technical team suspects sabotage after site inspection

A three-member technical team of senior railway officials from the Signal & Telecom, Engineering and Operations department raised serious apprehension of sabotage after inspecting the accident site at Kavaraippettai Railway Station in Tamil Nadu, railway sources said. As Met predicts heavy rainfall, TN govt sets up command centre to tackle it

The Tamil Nadu government has set up an integrated command centre in view of heavy rainfall predicted by the Meteorological department, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said on Sunday. After interacting with the officials on the measures taken at the command centre, he said a helpline '1913' has been established to serve the public round-the-clock and people can also download the TN ALERT mobile application to receive information about the rainfall. A Sharjah bound flight from Tiruchirappalli, shortly after departure on Friday evening, witnessed mid-air technical glitch and later landed safely, police said. TN CM announces bonuses and extra payments for 275,000 state PSU workers

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced a bonus and ex-gratia for 2.75 lakh employees of state public sector undertakings and statutory boards for the 2023-24 fiscal. Accordingly, all eligible workers of profit making PSUs under group C and D will be paid a minimum bonus of Rs 8,400 and a maximum of Rs 16,800, amounting to 8.33 per cent bonus and an ex-gratia of 11.67 per cent, an official release here said. The employees of the PSUs lacking allowable surplus will be paid a bonus of 8.33 per cent and an ex-gratia of 1.67 per cent. "The Tamil Nadu chief minister on October 10 ordered payment of bonus and ex-gratia to a total of 2,75,670 workers of state PSUs ahead of the festive (Diwali) season," the release said, and added that the move would entail the government an expenditure of Rs 369.65 crore.
