India, Tanzania agree to explore new areas of cooperation to boost ties

India and Tanzania have agreed on a roadmap to further boost their time-tested ties by identifying new areas of cooperation in sectors like trade, investment, agriculture, defence and education, the foreign ministers of the two countries said. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday met Tanzania's Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Stergomena Tax at the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission Meeting here. Jaishankar said the two sides had a very productive round of the Joint Commission. "This gave us an opportunity to do a stocktaking of our relationship to discuss what are the new areas that we need to move forward. Also, to agree on how to deepen our cooperation in the areas that we have been working on for many years," he said. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday called on Tanzania's President Samia Hassan and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties in areas like defence and security, maritime cooperation and capacity building. He conveyed the personal greetings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Samia. "Honoured to call on President Samia Hassan of Tanzania. India, Tanzania started trade settlements in local currencies: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said that India and Tanzania have started trade settlements in local currencies and this new initiative will help in promoting commerce between the two countries. Addressing industry leaders at a function, the minister said India-Tanzania bilateral trade has seen very strong growth, and stood at USD 6.4 billion in 2022-23. "Now, bear in mind, this is not only a very substantial bilateral trade, but it's also actually a bilateral trade, which is getting increasingly balanced. Many new products are being added to the trade basket...India remains the biggest destination for Tanzanian exports," he said. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has inaugurated the bust of Swami Vivekananda at India's cultural centre here in Tanzania, saying it stands in testimony to his timeless teachings which have transcended boundaries and underlines his message of faith in humanity. Jaishankar arrived here on Thursday after visiting Zanzibar. Jaishankar pays homage to Indian soldiers at War Memorial in Tanzania

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday paid homage to Indian soldiers cremated at the Commonwealth War Memorial here in Tanzania. The External Affairs Minister arrived here on Thursday after visiting Zanzibar. India and Tanzania have traditionally enjoyed close and friendly relations. India not pursuing 'narrow economic activities' in Africa: Jaishankar

In a veiled attack on China, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that, unlike some other countries, India is not "an extractive economy" and it was not pursuing "narrow economic activities" in the resource-rich African continent. India signs agreement with Tanzania to set up first int'l IIT campus

The first IIT campus outside India will come up in Tanzania's Zanzibar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed for setting up of a campus of IIT Madras in Zanzibar, which is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. The agreement was inked on Wednesday in presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Zanzibar's President Hussein Ali Mwinyi. Jaishakar is on a visit to Tanzania. "The first IIT campus to be set up outside India will be in Zanzibar," the MEA said. It said an MoU was signed between the India's education ministry, IIT Madras and Zanzibar's ministry of education and vocational training. India, Tanzania agree on five-year roadmap for defence cooperation

India and Tanzania have finalised a five-year roadmap to expand overall bilateral defence cooperation including in areas of infrastructure building and collaboration in military equipment and technology. Both sides agreed on the roadmap at the second edition of India-Tanzania Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting that was held in Arusha on June 28 and 29. "During the meeting, the two sides discussed a wide range of opportunities for collaboration with a view to enhancing security in the Indian Ocean Region," the defence ministry said.
