The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) on Thursday partly allowed Tata Power's petition to hike electricity charges for its consumers in the financial capital. The regulator's order will give some relief to lower-end consumers, and the tariff hikes will be over 50 per cent as well. The revisions are for FY25, and effective from April 1. Earlier, the power utility, which serves over 7.5 lakh consumers in the city, had proposed a "rationalization" of tariffs where it was pitching for more than doubling the rate per unit paid by those consuming up to 100 units per month, while the extent of the proposed hike was lower for those at the higher end. In a statement issued after the MERC order, Tata Power said even after the order, its tariff for the residential category of up to 100 units remains "the lowest" when compared with competition. Tata Power on Friday said it has received a letter of intent from REC Power Development and Consultancy to develop the Jalpura Khurja Power Transmission project at an estimated cost of Rs 838 crore. In an exchange filing, Tata Power said, "It has received a letter of intent (LoI) from REC Power Development and Consultancy Ltd (RECPDCL) -- a wholly-owned subsidiary of REC Ltd -- to acquire Jalpura Khurja Power Transmission Limited, a project special purpose vehicle". The estimated cost of the project is Rs 838 crore, Tata Power said. The project SPV will be developed on a build-own-operate transfer (BOOT) basis to provide transmission service for 35 years from the scheduled date of commercial operation (SCOD), 18 months from the date of SPV acquisition. Tata Power on Friday posted a marginal increase of 2 per cent in its consolidated net profit at Rs 1,076 crore in December 2023 quarter. Its consolidated net profit was Rs 1,052 crore in the quarter ended on December 31, 2022, a company statement showed. Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) on Monday said it has commissioned a 1,000-kilowatt bifacial solar system project in West Bengal. Bifacial solar system comprises solar panel which captures sunlight from both surfaces and produces power from two sides. "TPREL has successfully commissioned a pioneering 1040 kW Bifacial Solar System project with Chengmari Tea Estate. This marks the first-ever installation of on-ground bifacial modules in eastern India," the Tata Power company said in a statement. The project is expected to generate around 1.5 million units (MUs) of energy annually and reduce carbon footprint of 29,420 lakh tonnes, which is equivalent to planting 47,000 teak trees. Power distribution company TPDDL will organise a special "Lok Adalat" in association with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) to offer on-spot-settlement of electricity theft cases on January 28, a discom official said Thursday. The special court will start at 10 am near Venkateshwar Global School in Rohini Sector-13, the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) spokesperson said. The litigants can register for the Lok Adalat by dialling 19124 or writing to eac.care@tatapower-ddl.com. The complainants must carry their photo identity and a copy of their theft bill during the Lok Adalat. "Consumers who look forward to settling their power-theft cases can utilise this opportunity for an amicable and immediate settlement of unsolved cases. In case of a default, the company will be obliged to initiate criminal proceedings against the consumers under the Electricity Act, 2003," he added.
With Delhi reeling under intense cold, the peak power demand of the city surged to an all-time high of 5,701 MW on Friday morning. According to the State Load Dispatch Centre's real-time data, the peak power demand of Delhi at 10.49 AM on Friday was 5,701 MW. The power discoms have estimated the winter peak power demand to reach up to 5,760 MW this year. The previous highest peak winter demand was 5,611 MW on Wednesday morning. The national capital on Friday recorded its lowest temperature this winter with the minimum dipping to 3.9 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average, the weather department said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said it is the lowest minimum temperature in the last five years. Since January 1, Delhi's peak power demand has risen by over 11 per cent, discom officials said. Tata Power's arm Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) plans to invest Rs 70,000 crore for the development of 10,000 MW of renewable energy power projects in Gujarat. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government in this regard at the ongoing 10th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 in Gandhinagar. These projects would generate 3,000 job opportunities, the company said in a statement. "The 10,000 MW renewable energy power projects comprise solar, wind, hybrid, Round The Clock (RTC), peak, and Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE), covering an extensive 50,000-acre of encumbrance-free government land," it said.
Tata Power's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Praveer Sinha on Wednesday said the private capital expenditure has been "very good". Sinha, who is also the chairman of industry lobby CII's Western Region, said that he expects the upcoming Union Budget to continue with the existing policy framework. "I think the private investment has been very good," Sinha told PTI. He was responding to a query about concerns over sluggish private capital investments. According to him, the private sector is investing in new opportunities and technologies like artificial intelligence, sustainability, renewable energy and semiconductor technologies. India will play an important role in the global arena going ahead, Sinha said, affirming the private sector's commitment to contribute its best in the journey. Analysts are concerned about the lack of interest in the private sector to invest, which can be a major growth driver for the economy, despite the very high capacity utilisation.
