The All India Federation of University and College Teacher's Organizations (AIFUCTO) asserted that it would continue with its democratic protest against the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the country. The educational scenario of our nation "suffers from the evils of neoliberal economics measures" while the retreat of the state from the domain and powerful entry of market forces have provided a "serious threat" to the inclusive education system of our nation, AIFUCTO General Secretary, Prof Arun Kumar said. "To make the matter worse the NEP-2020 came into effect July 28, 2020," Kumar said while addressing media persons on the sidelines of the two-day AIFUCTO North Eastern Council meeting cum National Seminar at Kohima Science College here on Friday. No stones are now being left unturned to implement the policy at a rapid pace, directives are issued, reports are summoned thereby posing a great threat to the future of the country, he alleged. Delhi University's Executive Council (EC) on Friday gave its nod to a controversial notification on the teacher-student ratio for lectures and tutorials, despite opposition from some of its members. Vice Chancellor (VC) Yogesh Singh used his emergency powers in the matter, according to an EC member. In a notification issued last month, the university had capped the class size for lectures and tutorials at 60 and 30 respectively. The resolution was passed in Friday's meeting despite opposition from some of the members. The VC used his emergency powers to pass the resolution, the EC member cited above said. Three members of the EC disapproved of the use of emergency powers by Singh. "The use of Emergency Powers on a policy matter is a subversion of Statutory Bodies. It is a misuse of the powers given by Statute 11 (G) which is an enabling clause to deal with unforeseen circumstances. "Even as the meetings of the Academic Council and the Executive Council were already scheduled, DU
The Kerala General Education Department on Wednesday said there would be a total of 205 working days in state-run schools in the ongoing academic year 2023-24. The decision was taken during a meeting of various teachers' associations convened by General Education Minister V Sivankutty here. During the academic year 2022-23, state-run schools functioned for198 days. The existing rules and court verdicts have suggested that there should be five working days in a week, and Saturdays have been made a working day in selected weeks to ensure this. Though the government had earlier decided to increase the number of working days to 210 during the academic year, it was later revised and fixed at 205, based on the request of teachers' associations, an official statement said. There would be no change in the dates of summer holidays, it said. In the statement, the education department also rejected the propaganda that all Saturdays would now be working days in state schools. Out of the tota
A section of teachers on Friday called on Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, seeking an investigation into the difficulties faced by students due to the Common University Entrance Test and the impact of the paper on the "social profile" of classrooms. In a note flagging several issues, the teachers, including academic council members, alleged that there appeared to be a steep rise in admission of students belonging to the upper-middle economic class due to the CUET. The CUET, conducted by the National Testing Agency, was launched last year for admission to undergraduate programmes. Several universities, including the DU, adopted the CUET despite opposition from a section of teachers. "Since students who belong to the working class are not able to afford highly priced CUET coaching. This is a kind of virtual expulsion of students who belong to working or lower middle-class backgrounds," the teachers mentioned in the letter. They also pointed out that some students prepar
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that her government will challenge the Calcutta High Court order cancelling jobs of around 36,000 primary teachers in state-sponsored and aided schools. She also urged those teachers who lost their jobs and their family members not to be depressed as her government is with them. The CM also alleged that those teachers lost their jobs because of the ongoing agitation of the state government employees demanding a hike in their DA and bringing it at par with the central government staff. "We have been getting appeals from the families of these 36,000 (teachers) who lost their jobs. I feel very bad. We have decided to move the division bench," Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat. The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered cancellation of the appointments of 36,000 primary teachers in state-sponsored and aided schools as the due procedure was not followed in the appointment process. "Do not be depressed, remember tha
Delhi University teachers have written to the vice chancellor citing "discrepancies" in the allocation of teaching positions under reserved categories at the Indraprastha College for Women, alleging that the roster has been twisted in such a way that three ST positions have "lapsed" in different departments. According to teachers, there was only a single vacancy for the Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the IPCW's commerce department in 2019, which has come down to zero this year. A similar trend has been noticed in the Economics department as well. In the letter dated Friday, 10 teachers, including academic council members, have urged Yogesh Singh to take appropriate action in the matter. The IPCW Principal Poonam Kumaria did not respond to calls from PTI. "We would like to let you know about the various discrepancies that have been time and again prevalent in the allocation of teaching positions in the colleges of Delhi University.
