Hong Kongers alarmed by Google translation gaffe

Hong Kong social media lit up on Friday when protesters noticed Google's translation software was briefly churning out a rather odd suggestion during a week that has seen the worst political violence to hit the city in decades. Eagle-eyed Google users discovered that when people entered the phrase "I am sad to see Hong Kong become part of China" the suggested translation in both Simplified and Traditional Chinese converted the word "sad" to "happy". It was not immediately clear what sparked the gaffe but Danny Sullivan, an official at Google, said in a tweet "we're looking into why we had this translation and expect to have a fix to resolve it soon". Instagram came back online after going down for over an hour early Friday morning. Users from all across the world reported that they could not access Facebook's photo-sharing service via its app and website.Instagram acknowledged the outage on microblogging site Twitter. Karnataka unveils online building plan approval facility

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Thursday launched 118 websites that would enable citizens get building plan approvals, diversion of land use change and other related permissions through online submissions, avoiding middlemen and delays. "We have simplified the process of getting building plan sanction and land use change. It will bring greater transparency and end corruption and save people's time and money," Kumaraswamy told reporters. Urban Development Minister U T Khader said the initiative of his department will save people from running from pillar to post to get approvals. It will also remove middlemen from the system, he told reporters here. These websites and softwares integrate 14 departments and forms can be submitted online. The staus of their applications will be shared through SMS to the applicants.
