Billed as "one of the most exciting artists of our time", Ai-Da differs from generations of past masters in one inescapable way: she is a robot. Ai-Da is the brainchild of Aidan Meller, who claims she is the world's first ultra-realistic humanoid artist, able to draw creatively thanks to in-built artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The 46-year-old art dealer unveiled Ai-Da -- dressed in a brown wig and period-style painter's blouse -- in Oxford on Wednesday, ahead of an exhibition of her first works opening next week in the English university city. "She is fully algorithmic... fully creative," Meller told reporters, standing alongside his creation. "She is not an expensive printer. We do not know what she's going to do," he insisted. As he spoke, an occasionally blinking Ai-Da, built with cameras for eyes and a robotic arm to draw with, worked on a sketch of him from behind a desk. Forty-five minutes later, a delicate expressionist drawing of Meller, comprising deft pencil ...
Russia's efforts to sow misinformation on Twitter ahead of the 2016 US election was more extensive and professional than earlier believed, security researchers said Wednesday. A report by the security firm Symantec said some of the accounts linked to Russia's Internet Research Agency dated back as far as 2014 and that the manipulation effort involved a vast effort that included both automated "bots" and manual operations. "While this propaganda campaign has often been referred to as the work of trolls, the release of the dataset makes it obvious that it was far more than that," said Gillian Cleary of Symantec's Security Technology and Response team in a blog post. "It was planned months in advance and the operators had the resources to create and manage a vast disinformation network. It was a highly professional campaign." Twitter said the Symantec analysis was based on its data released to researchers last year of some 10 million tweets. While the Russian campaign used Facebook and ..

Scientists have printed highly efficient organic solar cells using inkjet printing, that could pave the way for disposable electronics. Organic photovoltaic materials could soon replace inorganic semiconductors in solar-powered devices because of their lightness, flexibility and low cost. These materials are easy to modify and process in solution, which makes them highly attractive for customisation and large-scale production. In particular, customised solar cell designs can be used in conjunction with other printed electronics to power a plethora of applications, such as disposable electronics, intelligent packaging, interactive printed media and lab-on-a-chip devices. Researchers from the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia have engineered inkjet-printable solar materials containing a nonfullerene acceptor and deposited these inks over large areas to produce photovoltaic cells. The resulting devices achieved efficiencies of six per cent, ...

TRAI hopes to go live, in a few weeks, with an all India coverage map on its site that will allow telecom subscribers to check the extent and strength of an operator's network coverage at a chosen location, a top official has said. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had, last year, launched the beta version of the map on a limited scale - covering only two circles including Delhi, and has now roped in a new vendor to scale up its efforts. The previous contract was with Centre for Development of Telematics. "TRAI is preparing the coverage map of the country so as to identify the black holes or the areas which are not covered or partially covered. We have roped in a vendor who is doing the development, we are taking data from the service providers," TRAI Chairman R S Sharma told PTI recently. The project will be live in a few weeks' time, Sharma added. "The coverage map will plot on a map the (network) coverage of operators' services, say 2G, 3G, 4G, VOLTE, with ...
