2.35 cr people used rlys' free WiFi in May; 4,791 more stations to be covered this year: RailTel
Over two crore users logged into the railway WiFi at 1,606 stations across its network in May and the facility of free internet would be extended to the remaining 4,791 stations within this year, Indian Railways' digital arm RailTel said Tuesday. In May, the total number of user logins at the WiFi enabled stations was 2.35 crore, it said. "The numbers speak volumes about the fact that despite having easy access to mobile internet, public WiFi is still the preferred choice of rail users at railway stations... now the WiFi service will be extended to another 4,791 stations within this year which will enable every station of Indian Railways (except the halt stations) to have a WiFi hotspot," RailTel said in a statement. Stations in tier 1 cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai registered a greater number of user logins and data consumption than their tier 2 counterparts. An increasing number of organisations across sectors like retail, transportation and logistics and manufacturing are betting on mobile technology to enhance employee productivity, improve order fulfilment accuracy and increase revenues, a report by Zebra Technologies said Tuesday. Zebra, which offers hardware and software solutions like printers and bar code scanners, in its study said 58 per cent respondents in the Asia Pacific region had stated they are expanding mobile technology to enterprise-wide use. This number is expected to reach 97 per cent by 2023, it added. Zoho to offer software at discount rate for serving MSMEs
: Software firm Zoho Tuesday said it would offer its software at a discount rate to help improve digital literacy as part of the company's plan to serve micro, small and medium enterprises. For this purpose, the city-based company has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA), a registered trade body representing the small and medium enterprises. Zoho would counsel and train the members of the association on how to automate the company's business software. "TANSTIA has been serving the industry for over 50 years now and it has been our mission to strengthen the MSME sector. Scientists have developed a simple method to calibrate smartphone cameras, an tool that will help amateurs and science students to collect useful research data without specialised equipment. Although smartphones and other consumer cameras are increasingly used for scientific applications, it is difficult to compare and combine data from different devices. "The low cost of consumer cameras makes them ideal for projects involving large-scale deployment, autonomous monitoring or citizen science," said Olivier Burggraaff, who led the research team from Leiden University in the Netherlands. "Our standardised calibration method will make it easier for anyone to use a consumer camera to do things like measure pollution by detecting aerosol particles in the air," said Burggraaff, who developed the calibration method. 'Centre for Technology and Policing' to be set up in Delhi
A 'Centre for Technology and Policing' (CTP) will be set up in the city with the help of IIT-Delhi which will assist police in identifying appropriate technology for crime investigations, maintenance of law and order, among others. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed Monday in the presence of Lt Governor Anil Baijal between registrar, IIT-Delhi and additional CP, (Cyber and Technology) for the CTP to be set up at the Okhla campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Batting for shared responsibility, tech giant Google has stated that governments need to draw clear lines between "legal and illegal" speech for content-sharing platforms, as lack of clear definitions could lead to "arbitrary" enforcement that limits access to legitimate information. Google said content-sharing platforms are already working on developing content policies that set up baseline expectations for users, and articulates a clear basis for removal of content as well as for suspension or closure of accounts. "But, it's also important for governments to draw clear lines between legal and illegal speech, based on evidence of harm and consistent with norms of democratic accountability and international human rights. Sterlite Power doubles transmission capacity in Lucknow
Sterlite Power Monday said it has uprated and commissioned five 132 kv lines in Lucknow, the Capital of Uttar Pradesh. Transmission capacity of these five existing lines were doubled without any major change to existing infrastructure, a Sterlite Power statement said. According to the statement, these lines, which normally carry 80-85 MW load, will now be able to carry a load of over 160 MW after the uprate. "Our solutions of upgrade and uprate of transmission lines solve key constraints around time, space and capital. These solutions have the potential to solve transmission congestion challenges in all states including Uttar Pradesh towards ensuring 24X7 reliable power," Manish Agarwal, CEO, Solutions Business, Sterlite Power, said.
