New prosthetic foot to help tackle tough terrain

Stanford scientists have developed a more stable prosthetic foot which they say could make challenging terrain more manageable for people who have lost a lower leg. The new design has a kind of tripod foot that responds to rough terrain by actively shifting pressure between three different contact points. "Prosthetic emulators allow us to try lots of different designs without the overhead of new hardware," said Steven Collins, an associate professor at Stanford University in the US. "Basically, we can try any kind of crazy design ideas we might have and see how people respond to them," he said, without having to build each idea separately, an effort that can take months or years for each different design. People with a leg amputation are five times more likely to fall in the course of a year, which may contribute to why they are also less socially engaged. A better prosthetic limb could improve not just mobility but overall quality of life as well, according to the study published in .

Telecoms giant EE launches Britain's first 5G services

British mobile phone operator EE on Thursday became the first in the country to launch a high-speed 5G network, but without smartphones from controversial Chinese technology giant Huawei. EE, which is a division of British telecoms giant BT, has launched 5G in six major cities comprising Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London and Manchester -- and more hubs will follow, it said in a statement. Next-generation 5G mobile networks offer almost instantaneous data transfer that will become the nervous system of Europe's economy in strategic sectors like energy, transport, banking and health care. EE announced last week that it would make its 5G network available to the public -- but would not sell Huawei's first 5G phone, the Mate 20 X 5G. However, the Chinese company still provides 5G wireless network infrastructure equipment to EE. Rival British mobile phone giant Vodafone will launch its own 5G services on July 3 in seven UK cities -- but it has also paused the sale of the ...

UoH develops low-cost rubbing machine for manufacturing LCDs

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) here Thursday announced a group of its researchers has developed and designed a low-cost, indigenous rubbing machine used in the manufacture of LCDs. Rubbing is one of the most crucial processes required for Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) fabrication, UoH Vice-Chancellor Professor Appa Rao Podile told reporters here. Though LCDs are not manufactured in India, yet the advent of this technology is a step ahead in future, he said adding a patent has been applied for the machine. It was expected the machine will not only encourage LCDs fabrication in the country but also significantly lower the production cost, he said. "The proper anchoring of liquid crystal, a component required for visual image production, is achieved via rubbing. Internationally, the display manufacturing industries have large rubbing machines for in-house consumption and R&D purposes. But, researchers in India rely on manual rubbing process with ...

The state police's traffic branch has purchased 39 such high-tech guns at a cost of Rs 3.9 crore, an official release said. Five of these US-made devices will be given to the Ahmedabad city police, and every district police force will also be provided one of these guns in the coming days, the release said, quoting state traffic branch superintendent of police Bhagirathsinh Jadeja. The gun uses laser technology to detect the speed of a vehicle. It can record speed of three vehicles simultaneously in a second, even if the vehicles are a km away, Jadeja said. "The speed gun is an online device which can send an e-memo to the owner with a photo of the vehicle. If required, the speed gun can also generate and print the challan offline on the spot," he said. Facebook isn't deleting the fake Pelosi video. Should it?

When a doctored video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi one altered to show the Democratic leader slurring her words began making the rounds on Facebook last week, the social network didn't take it down. Instead, it "downranked" the video, a behind-the-scenes move intended to limit its spread. That outraged some people who believe Facebook should do more to clamp down on misinformation. Pelosi derided Facebook Wednesday for not taking down the video even though it knows it is false. But the company and some civil libertarians warn that Facebook could evolve into an unaccountable censor if it's forced to make judgment calls on the veracity of text, photos or videos. Facebook has long resisted making declarations about the truthfulness of posts that could open it up to charges of censorship or political bias. It manages to get itself in enough trouble simply trying to enforce more basic rules in difficult cases, such as the time a straightforward application of its ban on nudity led it to
