New govt should give a leg-up to science and technology: Scientist Madhavan Nair

The new government at the Centre needs to pay lot more attention to science & technology, an eminent scientist said Wednesday and raised the pitch for setting up science council of India for efficient and focused approach towards research and development programmes. Former chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) G Madhavan Nair said a critical review is needed on research activities in the fields of defence, atomic energy, agriculture and medical. "Today something visible... is available from the ISRO programmes. Why all other areas are silent? Critical review is required, especially in defence research, atomic energy, agriculture and medical research," he said. "These fields are highly relevant for the country. And practically if results are not visible that means that kind of work is not taking place", he added. ISRO is successful because it works on a mission-mode approach, Nair said. According to him, the government has to cast a number of national teams in areas

Stress leads to Facebook addiction: Study

While Facebook can act as a source of comfort during periods of stress, recent findings suggest that stressed users are at risk of developing a pathological dependence on such social media sites. As part of the study, the researchers evaluated the results from an online survey that had been taken by 309 Facebook users between the ages of 18 and 56."We have specifically invited students to participate in the survey, as they often experience a high level of stress for a number of reasons," said Julia Brailovskaia, lead researcher of the project.Students are often put under pressure to succeed. Moreover, many leave their family home and the social network there; they have to run a household for the first time, are busy building new relationships.Findings of the study are published in the Journal of Psychiatry Research. The researchers' questions helped deduce the stress level, as well as how much social support the participants received offline and online. Moreover, the users were asked ...

Gotta catch some shuteye: Pokemon unveils 'sleep game'

Having trouble waking up in the morning? Not getting enough sleep? The company that brought you Pokemon Go may have a solution: a game "played" by sleeping. Pokemon Company said on Wednesday it would release a new smartphone game called "Pokemon Sleep" in 2020, turning sleep into entertainment. The firm created the wildly popular Pokemon Go app, a game that let players walking the real world hunt virtual Pokemon, in 2016. "Now we set our sights on sleeping," president Tsunekazu Ishihara told reporters. "It's a game with which you look forward to waking up," he said. "Turning sleeping... into entertainment is our next goal." Ishihara offered little detail on the game, but Nintendo -- which helped develop Pokemon Go -- said during the press conference in Tokyo that they are rolling out a new device that can track players' sleep and send data to their smartphone. The announcement sparked a social media frenzy, and plenty of quips. "I can't wait to be an esports player now that sleeping ..

Canada panel slams Zuckerberg, Sandberg for hearing no-show

A panel of politicians from Canada and several other nations has criticised Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg for ignoring subpoenas to appear at a hearing on protecting privacy and democracies online. The panel also on Tuesday adopted a motion to serve the pair with a formal summons to appear before the Canadian parliament's ethics committee should they ever travel to Canada. "Together, we represent over 402 million citizens," said Bob Zimmer, chair of Canada's privacy and ethics committee, which is hosting the meeting. "Mark Zuckerberg's unwillingness to appear before us and give personal testimony is further evidence that his public comments about working with lawmakers rings hollow." Although Zuckerberg and Sandberg were no-shows, Facebook's policy directors Kevin Chan and Neil Potts did appear and faced a grilling. The international committee on big data, privacy and democracy is holding hearings this week in Ottawa to consider ways to prevent social media abuses ...

Would you wear headphones made from fungus?

It might seem gross but someone has actually built headphones not from metal, plastic, or animal skin, rather yeast, fungus, and bacteria.Korvaa is the world's first microbe-grown headphone prototype. As Fast Company reports, the process to identify and finalise materials took six months. At the end, things that made to the prototype were 3D printed plastic from yeast, ear passing and leather on top from fungus, and mesh that touches the ears from biosynthetic spider silk. The prototype looks like a regular headphone but the innards to make it function like one are missing. The researchers hope to develop that in the future as well. Korvaa is designed by VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, Aalto University, and design firm Aivan.

New tech can 3D print bathroom in a day

Scientists have created a system that can 3D print a bathroom -- complete with concealed drains and piping -- in less than a day. The interior of the unit includes a sink, mirror, shower, toilet bowl, ceramic tiled walls and flooring. After printing, the bathroom is furnished with toilet fittings to become a pre-fabricated unit, ready for use in construction projects, according to researchers from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore who have developed the system. This could potentially help firms build prefabricated bathroom units (PBU) about 30 per cent more quickly and 30 per cent lighter than current PBUs. In the past four years, the team focused on developing a special concrete mix which is fluid enough to flow through the hoses and print nozzle, yet can harden fast enough so that the next layer is able to be printed on it. On top of ensuring a consistent print quality, the final product also has to be as strong as conventional concrete, researchers said. The printing ...

Models for accurate prediction of road surfaces &pavements

: IIT-Hyderabad Tuesday said its researchers have developed models and computational simulation studies to predict performance of road surfaces or pavements and compare these predictions with conventional road designs. This research offers a route to accurate prediction of pavement performance, which can help in construction of long lasting roads in India, a IIT Hyderabad press release said. This research work has been recently published in the Journal of Transport Engineering, it said. India has the second largest road network in the world after the United States nd has about 4.37 km of roads per 1,000 people. The past two decades have seen a drive to pave the Indian roadway network, and as of 2016, 62.5 per cent of Indian roads have been paved, it said. Construction of the road surface or pavement is a complex process as they should provide for comfortable riding quality, good skid resistance, favorable light reflecting characteristics and low noise pollution. The ...

IIT Hyderabad's model may help construct long-lasting roads in India

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad have developed a novel modelling technique which they say could help in the construction of long-lasting roads in the country. The technique called reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) can predict the performance of road surfaces or pavements and compare these predictions with conventional road designs, researchers said. "RBDO is a modelling technique that combines optimisation approaches with reliability assessment of structures," said Professor Sireesh Saride, from Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Hyderabad. The researchers noted that India has the second largest road network in the world, after the US, and has about 4.37 kilometres of roads per 1,000 people. The past two decades have seen a drive to pave the Indian roadway network, and as of 2016, 62.5 per cent of Indian roads has been paved, they said. Construction of the road surface or pavement is a complex process because they must be able to provide .
