The world's biggest unmanned dump trucks connect to 5G network

BELAZ unmanned dump trucks, which are among the biggest in the world, has begun working at a test site in the town of Zhodino in Belarus using 5G.The test zone has been created by infrastructure operator beCloud, BELAZ and VIST Group (part of ZYFRA Group).A test autonomous network using fifth-generation technologies, working in conjunction with the LTE-Advanced Pro network, has been deployed at the BELAZ plant. This is a prototype of the future 5G network.Sets of equipment that meet the technical specifications of the 5G standard have being installed on two heavy trucks - a pit truck and a loader. The standard technologies used (New Radio and LTE-Advanced Pro) have enabled VIST Group technicians to test unmanned vehicle control, as well as the operation of dump trucks in robot mode (the Smart Quarry project). For autonomous vehicles, a system that scans and analyses the nuances of the geological situation should transmit information with a minimal delay time. The beCloud specialists ...

Octopus-inspired wearable sensors developed

Inspired by octopus 'suckers', scientists have developed flexible wearable sensors that stick to the skin, paving the way for novel health trackers that could monitor a variety of human activities. For a wearable sensor to be truly effective, it must be flexible and adhere fully to both wet and dry skin but still remain comfortable for the user, according to the researchers from Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in South Korea. The material that the sensing compounds rest upon is crucial. Woven yarn is a popular substrate, but it sometimes does not fully contact the skin, especially if that skin is hairy. Typical yarns and threads are also vulnerable to wet environments. Adhesives can lose their grip underwater, and in dry environments they can be so sticky that they can be painful when peeled off. To overcome these challenges, researchers worked to develop a low-cost, graphene-based sensor with a yarn-like substrate that uses octopus-like suckers to adhere to skin. They coated an ...

Sound used to develop gen-next smart materials

Scientists have used sound waves to precisely manipulate atoms and molecules, accelerating the sustainable production of smart materials that can be used to store, separate, release or protect almost anything. Predicted to be the defining material of the 21st century, metal-organic frameworks, or MOFs, are incredibly versatile and super porous nanomaterials. MOFs are ideal for sensing and trapping substances at minute concentrations, to purify water or air, and can also hold large amounts of energy, for making better batteries and energy storage devices. Scientists have designed over 88,000 precisely-customised MOFs -- with applications ranging from agriculture to pharmaceuticals. However, the traditional process for creating them is environmentally unsustainable and can take several hours or even days. Now, researchers from RMIT University in Australia, have demonstrated a clean, green technique that can produce a customised MOF in minutes. Heba Ahmed, lead author of the study ...

Fake Facebook accounts: the never-ending battle against bots

The staggering figure of more than three billion fake accounts blocked by Facebook over a six-month period highlights the challenges faced by social networks in curbing automated accounts, or bots, and other nefarious efforts to manipulate the platforms. Facebook said this week it "disabled" 1.2 billion fake accounts in the last three months of 2018 and 2.19 billion in the first quarter of 2019. Most fake social media accounts are "bots," created by automated programs to post certain kinds of information -- a violation of Facebook's terms of service and part of an effort to manipulate social conversations. Sophisticated actors can create millions of accounts using the same program. Facebook said its artificial intelligence detects most of these efforts and disables the accounts before they can post on the platform. Still, it acknowledges that around five percent of the more than two billion active Facebook accounts are probably fake. Fake accounts may be used to amplify the popularity
