US warns Chinese drones may steal data: report

Washington has warned that Chinese-made drones could be giving spy agencies in Beijing "unfettered access" to stolen data, according to a report in American media. The Department of Homeland Security sent out an alert on Monday flagging drones built in China as a "potential risk to an organization's information", CNN reported. The US government has "strong concerns about any technology product that takes American data into the territory of an authoritarian state that permits its intelligence services to have unfettered access to that data or otherwise abuses that access," wrote CNN, quoting the DHS alert. The warning comes as China's tech sector attracts unprecedented scrutiny amid the bruising China-US trade war. Washington has cranked up the heat on China's Huawei by effectively banning American companies from selling or transferring US technology to the telecoms giant, though the US Commerce Department has granted the firm a 90-day reprieve. US intelligence believes Huawei is ...

Without Google, Huawei phones could become paperweights: Report

Google's restriction of business ties with Huawei, the world's No. 2 smartphone maker, could hit the demand for the Chinese firm's devices overseas by reducing them to be paperweights and give market leader Samsung a leg up in cementing its lead in Android devices, a media report said on Tuesday. Rival phone brands Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo would benefit from Google's suspension of services to Huawei, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. Last week, the Trump administration had placed Huawei and its affiliates on a blacklist, a move that essentially bans the Chinese firm from purchasing parts and components from American companies without the US government approval. Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., said it is complying with and "reviewing the implications" of the requirement for export licenses for technology sales to Huawei, which uses Google's Android operating system in its smartphones. Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei Tuesday downplayed the impact of the US executive order ...

'Spidey senses' could help self driving cars avoid crashes

Scientists are incorporating spider-inspired sensors into the shells of autonomous drones and cars so that they can better detect and avoid objects. Better sensing capabilities would make it possible for drones to navigate in dangerous environments and for cars to prevent accidents caused by human error, said researchers from Purdue University in the US. Current state-of-the-art sensor technology doesn't process data fast enough -- but nature does, according to the study published in the journal ACS Nano. Researchers built sensors inspired by spiders, bats, birds and other animals, whose actual spidey senses are nerve endings linked to special neurons called mechanoreceptors. The nerve endings -- mechanosensors -- only detect and process information essential to an animal's survival. They come in the form of hair, cilia or feathers. "There is already an explosion of data that intelligent systems can collect -- and this rate is increasing faster than what conventional computing would ..

Spectrum auction need to be commenced for 5G roll out: Tech

The Department of Telecomm need to commence the auction of 5G spectrum in India as the regulators in some countries have already formulated policies and initiated spectrum auctions for the 5G roll out in their respective nations, a senior official of the IT giant Tech Mahindra has said. Manish Vyas, President of Communications Business and Chief Executive Officer of Network Services, Tech Mahindra said 4G is yet to touch all parts of the country, and while that happens on a massive scale, there are some "definite green-shoots" of 5G trials. More than technology however, the bigger impediment could be the regulatory body's policy on 5G spectrum. The experimental license by DoT will need modifications, and till that happens, the sector is in for a "waiting game," he said. "US, Australia, Italy, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia and more (have started 5G spectrum auctions). Spectrum is the life blood of any wireless network. For 5G, globally regulators have been licensing mid-band

New robot dog can jump, perform back flips

Stanford scientists have developed a dog-like, four-legged robot that can perform acrobatic tricks and traverse challenging terrains. Dubbed Stanford Doggo, the robot can be easily built by anyone by consulting comprehensive plans, code and a supply list that the researchers have made freely available online. "We had seen these other quadruped robots used in research, but they weren't something that you could bring into your own lab and use for your own projects," said Nathan Kau, a student at Stanford University in the US. "We wanted Stanford Doggo to be this open source robot that you could build yourself on a relatively small budget," said Kau. Whereas other similar robots can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars and require customised parts, the researchers estimate the cost of Stanford Doggo at less than USD 3,000 -- including manufacturing and shipping costs -- and nearly all the components can be bought online. They hope the accessibility of these resources inspires ...

Samsung shares surge as Huawei struggles

Samsung Electronics surged more than four percent Tuesday on the back of its chief rival Huawei's mounting problems, including a decision by Google to sever ties with the Chinese mobile phone maker. US internet giant Google, whose Android mobile operating system powers most of the world's smartphones, said this week it is cutting ties with Huawei to comply with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. The move could have dramatic implications for Huawei smartphone users, as the firm will no longer have access to Google's proprietary services -- which include the Gmail and Google Maps apps. Investors bet Huawei's loss could benefit Samsung, the world's biggest smartphone maker which has been facing increasing competition from its Chinese rival, sending its shares soaring 4.3 percent in afternoon trade in Seoul. Analysts say the US ban will damage Huawei's ability to sell phones outside China, offering Samsung a chance to consolidate its position at the top of the global ...
