'.Amazon' gives e-commerce giant its own internet domain

E-commerce giant Amazon was on its way to running its own online neighbourhood Monday after the internet's address keeper granted the ".amazon" domain to the company. After waiting in vain for years for the US online retail colossus and an alliance of South American countries to resolve their battle over the right to web addresses ending with ".amazon," the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) this month sided with the Seattle-based company. In 2012, Amazon applied for ".amazon" and two internationalized versions of the name. Brazil and several other countries put the US company on notice that they were opposed to the idea. "Due to its inseparable semantic relation to the Amazon forest, that domain should not be, in any way, the monopoly of a company," the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs argued on its website. "On the contrary, it is imperative that the States concerned be able to participate in the management and use of the name in order to defend and ...

US delays Huawei ban for 90 days

US officials have delayed a ban on American technology exports to Chinese tech giant Huawei until mid-August, saying the time was needed to allow for software updates and other contractual obligations. A Commerce Department filing Monday said the delay does not change the ban imposed by President Donald Trump on national security grounds, an action with major implications for US and Chinese technology firms. The document said authorities would not enforce the ban for 90 days to give Huawei and its partners time "to maintain and support existing and currently fully operational networks and equipment, including software updates and patches, subject to legally binding contracts and agreements... on or before May 16, 2019.

Automated cars can work together to keep traffic moving, says study

A study from the University of Cambridge has shown that a fleet of automated cars working together to keep traffic moving smoothly can improve overall traffic flow by at least 35 per cent. The study presented at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), will be useful for studying how autonomous cars can communicate with each other, and with cars controlled by human drivers, on real roads in the future."Autonomous cars could fix a lot of different problems associated with driving in cities, but there needs to be a way for them to work together," said co-author Michael He, an undergraduate student at St John's College, who designed the algorithms for the experiment."If different automotive manufacturers are all developing their own autonomous cars with their own software, those cars all need to communicate with each other effectively," said co-author Nicholas Hyldmar, an undergraduate student at Downing College, who designed much of the hardware for the ...

Mass movement: scientists adopt new kilogram definition

How we measure the world underwent a quantum leap on Monday as scientists adopted new hyper-accurate definitions for units of weight, electricity and temperature derived from the universal laws of Nature. The change, on the occasion of World Metrology Day, sees one of science's most influential objects -- a metal cylinder used to define what a kilogram is -- retired in favour of an infinitely more precise measurement taken from a quantum ratio. "Le Grand K", as the platinum-iridium object is known, stood as the world's benchmark of the kilogram for nearly 130 years before a decision was taken in November to bring several units of measurement into the 21st century. "The kilogram is the last unit of measurement based on a physical object," Thomas Grenon, director of France's National Laboratory of Metrology and Testing, said after the decision last year. "The problem is that it's had a life, it could fluctuate. That's not good enough, given the level of precision we need today." Instead

Google says services on Huawei phones still will function

Google said Monday its basic services on Huawei smartphones still will function following US sales curbs, but the Chinese tech giant faces the possible loss of other features and support. The announcement highlighted the growing damage to Huawei from Washington's order. The company has said until now US accusations it is a security threat have had little impact on sales outside the United States. Huawei Technologies Ltd., which uses Google's Android operating system in its smartphones, said it would continue to provide security updates and service. It gave no indication which map, photo or other services they might lose. The Trump administration's order targets China's first global tech brand and ratchets up disputes with Beijing over technology, trade and cyber-security. Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., said it is complying with and "reviewing the implications" of the requirement for export licenses for technology sales to Huawei, which took effect Thursday. "We assure you while we ..

Tech-savvy Estonians vote online in European elections

Estonia was crippled by cyberattacks on government networks during a dispute with Russia in 2007. Today the tiny tech-savvy nation is so certain of its cyber defences that it is the only country in the world to allow internet voting for the entire electorate, in every election, and thousands have already done so ahead of elections to the European Parliament. Internet voting or i-voting has been available since 2005 in the nation that gave the world Skype, and the percentage of voters using the internet to cast ballots has increased with each election, reaching 44% of voters in national election in March. Linda Lainvoo was one of the first Estonians to vote in the European Parliament election, which she did from a cafe before heading to work Thursday morning. The 32-year-old civil servant has voted online since she was first eligible to vote. "I couldn't imagine my life any different," Lainvoo said after logging into a secure online portal with her ID card and a PIN code. "I do ...
