Self-driving cars may ease traffic woes: Study

A fleet of driverless cars can improve overall traffic flow by at least 35 per cent by working together, a study suggests. The researchers, from the University of Cambridge in the UK, programmed a small fleet of miniature robotic cars to drive on a multi-lane track and observed how the traffic flow changed when one of the cars stopped. When the cars were not driving cooperatively, any cars behind the stopped car had to stop or slow down and wait for a gap in the traffic, as would typically happen on a real road. A queue quickly formed behind the stopped car and overall traffic flow was slowed. However, when the cars were communicating with each other and driving cooperatively, as soon as one car stopped in the inner lane, it sent a signal to all the other cars. "Autonomous cars could fix a lot of different problems associated with driving in cities, but there needs to be a way for them to work together," said Michael He, an undergraduate student at Cambridge, who designed the ...

Virtually energy-free superfast computing developed

Scientists have developed a method that can give computers the ability to carry out superfast data processing using light pulses instead of electricity. The research, published in the journal Nature, shows that magnets can be used to record computer data which consume virtually zero energy. The advance could possibly solve the problem of high energy costs accompanying data processing, according to researchers at the Lancaster University in the UK. Most data are encoded as binary information (0 or 1 respectively) through the orientation of tiny magnets, called spins, in magnetic hard-drives. The magnetic read/write head is used to set or retrieve information using electrical currents which dissipate huge amounts of energy. The method replaces electricity with extremely short pulses of light -- the duration of which is one trillionth of a second -- concentrated by special antennas on top of the magnet, researchers said. The new method is not only superfast but also energy efficient as ..

Novel robotic drone can fly, drive

Scientists have developed the first robot drone that can fly like a quadcopter, drive on tough terrain and squeeze into tight spaces using the same motors. The hybrid FSTAR (flying sprawl-tuned autonomous robot), created by researchers at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel, can fly over obstacles or run underneath them. The sprawl, which adjusts from a flat configuration to 55 degrees allows the robot to transform its movement from a flying quadcopter to a car-like robot, researchers said. It also adjusts its width to crawl or run on flat surfaces, climb over large obstacles and up closely-spaced walls, or squeeze through a tunnel, pipe or narrow gaps, they said. "We plan to develop larger and smaller versions to expand this family of sprawling robots for different applications, as well as algorithms that will help exploit speed and cost of transport for these flying/driving robots," said David Zarrouk, a senior lecturer at BGU. It can run on the ground at a speed .

Social network more important than language in online debates: Study

Want to win an argument online? Bolstering your social network may be more helpful than persuasive arguments or witty comebacks, a study has found. Researchers from Cornell University in the US analysed data from a website that hosts debates on a variety of topics. Users can debate each other, comment on other debates, ask and answer questions, create and respond to polls, and become friends. The study found that social interactions are more important than language in predicting who is going to succeed at online debating. However, the most accurate model for predicting successful debaters combines information about social interactions and language, researchers said. "It turns out that the interaction of people on this platform is really predictive of their success," said Esin Durmus, a doctoral student at Cornell University. "So if someone is trying to win an argument, they should focus on their social interactions, like discussing interesting findings with the people they're friends .

Wearable patches that can be your personalised ACs, heaters

Summers are here. And what one probably looks out for is -- cooling! What can be better than a device that provides personalised cooling as well as heating anytime, anywhere? The device, as published in the journal -- Science Advances -- is powered by a flexible, stretchable battery pack and is so suitable that it can be embedded in clothing. As an add-on feature, researchers say wearing it could help save energy on air conditioning and heating. The soft, stretchy wearable patch cools or warms a user's skin to a comfortable temperature and keeps it there as the ambient temperature changes."This type of device can improve your personal thermal comfort -- whether you are commuting on a hot day or feeling too cold in your office," says Prof Renkun Chen, University of California."If wearing this device can make you feel comfortable within a wider temperature range, you won't need to turn down the thermostat as much in the summer or crank up the heat as much in the winter," adds Prof ...
