Chinese rover sheds light on lunar mantle, may help unlock secrets of Earth, Moon's evolution

China's Chang'e-4 mission, the first to perform a soft landing on the far side of the Moon, has shed light on the chemical and mineralogical composition of the lunar mantle, an advance that could unravel the mystery of the evolution of Earth and its natural satellite. The Chinese spacecraft became the first misson to land on the lunar far side also known as the dark side of the moon in January. The rover Yutu-2 then rolled off the lander to explore its surroundings. Using data obtained by the visible and near infrared spectrometer installed on Yutu-2, a research team led by Li Chunlai, with the National Astronomical Observatories of China under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, found that the lunar soil in the landing area of the Chang'e-4 probe contains olivine and pyroxene which came from the lunar mantle deep inside the Moon. The first important scientific discovery of the Chang'e-4 probe was published online in the latest issue of the academic journal Nature. The Moon comprises a ..

World leaders, tech execs pledge to curb online violence

A dozen countries and global tech giants including Facebook, Google and Twitter pledged Wednesday to find ways to keep internet platforms from being used to spread hate, organize extremist groups and broadcast terror attacks. World leaders led by French President Emmanuel Macron and tech executives gathered in Paris to compile a set of guidelines dubbed the "Christchurch Call to Action," named after the New Zealand city where 51 people were killed in a March attack on mosques. Part of the attack had been broadcast live on Facebook, drawing public outrage and fueling the debate on how to better regulate social media. The agreement, which was drafted by the French and New Zealand governments, aims to prevent similar abuses of the internet while insisting that any actions must preserve "the principles of a free, open and secure internet, without compromising human rights and fundamental freedoms." COAI supports minimum broadband speed of up to 2 Mbps for 4G network

Industry body COAI Wednesday said it favours minimum broadband speed of up to 2 Mbps (megabits per second) for 4G networks. Currently, the minimum broadband speed is 512 Kbps. Asked if the association was in favour of minimum broadband speed being prescribed at 2 Mbps, especially given the proliferation of 4G services in India, Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) Director General Rajan Mathews told reporters: "Yes, we have supported this, on a 4G network." Mathews said most of the telecom operators are de facto already providing more than 2 mbps on an average and "at peaks a lot more", which is borne out by the data speed test results of various firms. "The problem is in basically saying you are giving one measure for your whole network...If you are saying on my 2G network, you should expect this speed, and on a 3G network you should expect this speed, and on a 4G network you should expect this speed... when we talk about our submission we said up to, because no operator ..

Past debate on Trai's MySpeed app results not a closed issue: COAI

More than a year after contesting the validity of mobile data speeds measured by a Trai app, industry body COAI said the issue is "not closed" and that users would tend to look at alternate data testers available, all of which yield similar results. The issue of mobile data speed measured by MySpeed app of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had been a bone of contention in the industry. Some operators, last year, had questioned the methods and results of the regulator's app that ranks telecom operators in upload and download speeds. The Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), at that point, had raised concerns over how data download speeds and test outcome for one operator recorded by Trai's app was sharply divergent from those measured by other testing services. Asked if the issue persisted or had been resolved to the satisfaction of operators, COAI Director General Rajan Mathews told reporters, "It is not a closed issue...if you knock off the 'outlier' then you ...

Facebook to curb livestreaming amid pressure over Christchurch massacre

Facebook announced Wednesday it would tighten access to its livestreaming feature as New Zealand's premier Jacinda Ardern and French leader Emmanuel Macron prepared to launch the global "Christchurch Call" initiative to tackle the spread of extremism online. Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has been under intense pressure since March when a white supremacist gunman used Facebook Live to stream his rampage at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, which left 51 people dead. The California-based platform said it would ban Facebook Live users who shared extremist content and seek to reinforce its own internal controls to stop the spread of offensive videos. "Following the horrific recent terrorist attacks in New Zealand, we've been reviewing what more we can do to limit our services from being used to cause harm or spread hate," Facebook vice-president of integrity Guy Rosen said in a statement. China blocks all language editions of Wikipedia

Beijing has broadened its block of online encyclopedia Wikipedia to include all language editions, reported an internet censorship research group, ahead of the country's most politically explosive anniversary. According to a report by the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), China started blocking all language editions of Wikipedia last month. Previously, most editions of Wikipedia -- besides the Chinese language version, which was reportedly blocked in 2015 -- were available, OONI said in their report. AFP could not open any of Wikipedia's versions in China on Wednesday. "At the end of the day, the content that really matters is Chinese-language content," said Charlie Smith, the pseudonym of one of the co-founders of Greatfire.org, which tracks online censorship in China. "Blocking access to all language versions of Wikipedia for internet users in China is just symbolic," he told AFP. "It symbolises the fear that the Chinese authorities have of the truth." Wikimedia ...
