The government is working on a framework to allow shopkeepers, restaurant and other small businessmen to retail WiFi services on a model similar to yesteryears public calling booths, a top official said Thursday. The model was suggested by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to set up Public Data Offices (PDOs) to enhance wifi hotspots across the country but it was put on the back burner due to opposition from telecom service providers. Speaking with reporters on the sidelines of an ITU-APT Foundation of India event, Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said, "We will bring some architecture of PDOs." The Uttar Pradesh government Thursday banned unauthorised persons from carrying mobile phones inside Vidhan Bhawan, which houses the state legislature complex, and all offices affiliated to the state secretariat. "The chief minister instructed officials to ensure that adequate security and cleanliness arrangements are in place in Vidhan Bhawan and at all the offices attached to the secretariat. Instructions were also issued to debar outsiders from bringing mobile phones inside these buildings," an official statement said. Concerned over sanitisation and security, the CM directed officials to have fool proof security check points in the secretariat and in other related offices, the statement said. "No unwanted person should enter any administrative office without the permission of the officials and mobile phones should be banned for unauthorised persons," the instructions said. Older smartphone users also prefer using PINs over fingerprints to unlock their phones, said researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada. They also found that older users are more likely to unlock their phones when they are stationary, such as when working at a desk or sitting at home. In order to give a boost to battery-operated or electric vehicles in the country, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Wednesday initiated steps for providing differential registration fees under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989.The amendment proposes to exempt battery-operated vehicles fees for issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of the new registration mark, an official statement said.This means that electric vehicles would be exempted from such registration charges. The exemption will apply to all categories of vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers.The Centre has been batting for electric vehicles as it will help in reducing India's dependence on oil imports, combating air pollution and will generate employment.
