Tomato, potato prices make home-cooked meals costlier in Dec: CRISIL report

Prices of home-cooked meals increased in December on dearer key kitchen staples like tomato and potato, a report said on Monday. The average cost of preparing a vegetarian thali was up 6 per cent at Rs 31.6 per plate in December when compared to the year-ago period's Rs 29.7, but was down from preceding November month's rate of Rs 32.7, the report by a unit of rating agency Crisil said. In the roti, rice, rate report which seeks to assess the common man's expenditure on food, Crisil found that a non-vegetarian thali cost was higher by 12 per cent on-year and 3 per cent on-month to Rs 63.3 in December. Explaining the reasons for the costlier food, the report said tomato prices were up 24 per cent at Rs 47 per kg in December, while potato surged 50 per cent to Rs 36 for a kg on a low base. A 16 per cent on-year increase in vegetable oil cost due to import duty hikes by the government aggravated it for the common man, it said. From an on-year perspective, an 11 per cent drop in LPG f

Tomato prices to cool down soon: Consumer affairs secretary Khare

Relief may be in sight for Delhi-NCR residents reeling under soaring tomato prices, which have crossed Rs 100 per kg mark, with increased supplies expected from Maharashtra in the coming days, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said on Thursday. The government will continue selling tomatoes at a subsidised rate of Rs 65 per kg in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai through the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF), Khare told reporters. The price surge comes as supplies from key southern states Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have been disrupted due to retreating monsoon rains causing crop damage and pest infestation. This supply crunch, coupled with festive season demand, has pushed prices northward. "While weekly arrivals have been impacted, we expect supplies from Maharashtra to improve shortly, which should help stabilise prices in the national capital," Khare said, adding that the government is maintaining strict vigilance on price movements. Since October 7, NCCF has s

NCCF launches tomato sale at Rs 65/kg in Delhi-NCR to combat rising prices

In a bid to address rising tomato prices, the National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) on Monday initiated a market intervention by directly procuring tomatoes from mandis and selling them at a subsidised rate of Rs 65 per kilogram at 50 locations of Delhi-NCR. The intervention is to protect consumers from the recent increase in tomato prices and to prevent windfall gains for intermediaries, according to an official statement. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare initiated the retail sale of tomatoes through mobile vans and NCCF retail shops at Krishi Bhawan. " We are trying to moderate the prices of tomatoes. With this market intervention, in the next 3-4 days prices of tomatoes will come down," Khare told reporters. The statement said the retail prices of tomatoes have seen an unwarranted increase in recent weeks despite continuous arrival in good quantities in mandis. NCCF to sell tomatoes at subsidised price in Delhi-NCR from July 29

To provide relief from soaring tomato prices, the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) will begin selling the commodity at a subsidised rate of Rs 60 per kg in the Delhi-NCR region from Monday. The move comes as tomato prices have surged due to supply disruptions caused by recent rains in producing centres. While the Consumer Affairs Ministry data showed retail tomato prices at Rs 77 per kg in Delhi on July 27, prices have been exceeding Rs 80 per kg in some areas, depending on quality and locality. "The mega sale will commence on July 29, 2024, and will gradually expand to other locations in Delhi-NCR in the coming days," NCCF said in a statement. The subsidised tomatoes will be available at various locations including Krishi Bhawan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Colony, Hauz Khas, Parliament Street, INA Market, and several areas in Noida, Rohini, and Gurugram, it said. This initiative aims to stabilise the market and provide substantial cost relief to consumers. NCCF

Tomato prices soar to Rs 100 per kg in Delhi markets after rains hit supply

Tomato prices soared to Rs 100 per kg in retail markets of the national capital on Saturday as adverse weather conditions in various parts of the country continue to affect supplies of the essential kitchen staple. Tomatoes are available at Rs 100 per kg at Mother Dairy's retail outlets, Safal, in the national capital. According to the data compiled by the Department of Consumer Affairs, retail prices of tomatoes in Delhi are ruling at Rs 93 per kg on Saturday, July 20. The all-India average price of tomatoes on July 20 is Rs 73.76 per kg as per the government data. A senior official from the department had last week attributed the sharp rise in prices to disruption in supplies caused by extreme heat followed by spells of excess rainfall. "Prices of tomato, potato and onion are ruling high in Delhi and some other cities. Extreme heat followed by spells of excess rainfall disrupted supplies, causing a spike in prices in consuming areas," the official had told PTI. At Mother Dairy

Tomato prices may ease in coming weeks on supplies from Andhra, K'taka

Retail tomato price, which soared to Rs 75 per kg in the national capital, is expected to cool in the coming weeks as supply improves from southern states, a government official said on Saturday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said prices of potato and onion, which also spiked due to supply disruptions, are expected to stabilize soon. "Prices of tomato, potato and onion are ruling high in Delhi and some other cities. Extreme heat followed by spells of excess rainfall disrupted supplies, causing a spike in prices in consuming areas," the consumer affairs ministry official told PTI. Tomato price in New Delhi has surged to Rs 75 per kg, but is likely to ease if heavy rainfall does not further disrupt supply chains, he said. According to the ministry data, retail tomato price in Delhi was Rs 75/kg on July 12, down from Rs 150/kg in the year-ago period. In Mumbai, the price was Rs 83/kg, while Kolkata reported it at Rs 80/kg. The all-India average retail price of .

Tomato prices decline in Karnataka to Rs 20 per kg as supply improves

From a high of Rs 140 per kg in the wholesale market a few weeks ago, the prices of tomatoes have come down sharply in parts of Karnataka to about Rs 20 as supply of the commodity has improved substantially, officials said on Monday. In the Mysuru APMC (Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee) yard, for example, tomato prices were down to Rs 14 per kg on Sunday. "Last week, the average price of tomatoes was Rs 18 to Rs 20 per kg as the supply has improved," Mysuru APMC Secretary M R Kumaraswamy told PTI over telephone when contacted. Market sources said the supply of the commodity has improved by two to three times compared to last month leading to sharp decline of their prices. "The highest price of tomatoes at the wholesale rate at Mysuru APMC was Rs 140 per kg last month," Kumaraswamy said. Retail prices of tomatoes are now ruling around Rs 30 in the State, he added.
