Test cheating probe Toyota plant raided on 11.2 mn vehicles sales claim

Japanese transport officials raided the plant of a Toyota group company on Tuesday to investigate cheating on engine testing, as the company reported it kept its status as the world's top automaker in 2023, selling 11.2 million vehicles. Hours after the probe began at Toyota Industries Corp.'s plant in Hekinan, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda vowed to steer the company out of scandal and ensure the Japanese automaker sticks to making good cars. My job is to steer the way for where the overall group should go, Toyoda said. He apologised, bowing deeply, and stressed the group vision was rooted in the Toyoda founding family's ideas of empowering the genba, or the workers on the plant floor, to make good cars that lead to people's happiness. The testing scandal comes at a time of otherwise stellar performance for Toyota, which makes the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid and Lexus luxury models. Its group global vehicle sales for 2023 were a record 11.22 million uni

Toyota suspends dispatch of 3 models in India due to some 'irregularities'

Toyota Kirloskar Motor is temporarily suspending the dispatch of its three models -- Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux -- in the country after "irregularities" were found in the certification tests for the diesel powertrain. Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO), a company affiliated with Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), on January 29, 2024, announced that irregularities in horsepower output certification tests were found on three diesel engine models. In case of India, such engines are used in Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux. "The irregularities concern the smoothing of power and torque curves but did not lead to any over-stating or over-claims on horsepower, torque or other powertrain related values," a Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) spokesperson said in a statement when contacted over the issue. The issue does not have any impact on the emissions or safety of the affected vehicles, the company stated. "Toyota is working with relevant authorities to re-confirm the data used for th

Toyota chief apologises for cheating on testing at group company again

Toyota chief Koji Sato apologized Monday to customers, suppliers and dealers for flawed testing at a group company, following a series of similar problems in recent years. The apology came a day before Chairman Akio Toyoda is to announce a global vision for the Toyota Motor Corp. group. The latest woes at Japan's top automaker involve testing required for Japanese government approval at Toyota Industries Corp., which makes diesel engines. False results were found for certification testing and other sampling inspections for engines which claimed the products met standards when they actually didn't, according to Toyota. We will do our utmost to resume production as soon as possible, Sato said at a hastily called news conference late Monday at Toyota's Tokyo office. Management was not able to fully comprehend and keep track of the details of what was happening on the ground, he said. Skirting of required tests surfaced last year at Daihatsu Motor Corp., which makes small cars and is
