The association of commercial drivers in Odisha has withdrawn its strike, as the cease work affected passenger bus services and transportation of petroleum products and milk. The Odisha Drivers' Mahasangha announced the withdrawal of the strike on Saturday night, the third day of the agitation, after getting assurance from the state government that their demands would be looked into. Road ministry proposes tech system for truckers to inform about accidents

The road transport and highways ministry on Friday said it has suggested that truck drivers could be allowed to use a technology system wherein they can inform authorities about an accident so that such an incident will not be considered as a hit-and-run case under the new law. "The matter comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs and it will take the final decision," road transport and highways secretary Anurag Jain said. His comments come days after some truckers went on a strike to protest against stringent provisions for hit-and-run cases under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which is yet to come into force. Earlier this week, the protesting truckers resumed work after talks with the government. According to Jain, truck drivers feel that if they stop after hitting a person to help the victim, they will be harmed by the public. "So we can use technology innovatively to find out the solution... We have suggested that the driver use a technology system to inform authorities, and then it .

Situation normalising day after petrol pumps in Punjab see panic buying

The situation was normalising at petrol pumps on Wednesday in Punjab where fuel supplies were being replenished with fresh stocks, a day after people resorted to panic buying amid truckers' strike. On Tuesday, long queues of motorists were witnessed at many places in Punjab and a few parts of Haryana over fears that stocks would run dry soon in the wake of truckers' strike against stricter punishments in the new law on hit-and-run cases. Later in the evening, authorities in some Punjab districts had said the truckers had called off their strike and urged people not to resort to panic buying. "The situation is normalising now and by evening supplies from depots to all fuel pumps should reach as before. Already, fuel supplies from the depots have started reaching several filling stations," said secretary general of the Punjab Petroleum Dealers Association Rajesh Kumar. He said no long queues like Tuesday were being witnessed at petrol pumps on Wednesday in the state. The administrat

South Korean truckers end 16-day strike over freight rates, return to work

Thousands of South Korean truckers are returning to work after voting Friday to end their 16-day walkout that disrupted construction and other domestic industries. Thousands of truckers seeking financial protections as fuel prices rise went on strike November 24. The government took aggressive steps to minimise interruptions such as by widening back-to-work orders on truckers and mobilising military vehicles to ease delays in industrial shipments. About 3,600 of the Cargo Truckers Solidarity union's 26,000 members participated in Friday's vote, and about 62 per cent of them voted in favour of ending the strike and returning to work. The union, which was striking to demand the government make permanent a minimum freight rate system that is set to expire at the end of 2022, said it will continue fighting for minimum fares it says are crucial for drivers' safety and financial stability in the face of rising fuel costs. The vote came a day after the government widened its contentious w
