Higher educational institutions across the country will now be allowed to create up to 25 per cent supernumerary seats for foreign students and will have to adopt a transparent admission process for them, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said on Friday. The draft "Guidelines for Admission and Supernumerary seats of International Students in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes in Higher Educational Institutions in India" were put in public domain last month for seeking feedback and have been notified now. "HEIs may create up to 25 pc supernumerary seats for international students, over and above of their total sanctioned enrolment for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The decision regarding supernumerary seats has to be carried out by the concerned higher educational institutions as per specific guidelines and regulations issued by the regulatory bodies considering the infrastructure, faculty and other requirements," the guidelines said. JNU VC meets UGC chairman; discusses release of grant, faculty increment

Normalised CUET scores to be used in merit lists, not percentile: UGC Chief

After the results for the Common University Entrance Test were declared, UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar on Friday said universities will prepare the rank list for undergraduate admissions on the basis of "normalised" scores and not percentile or "raw marks". Kumar told PTI that the scores have been normalised to provide a level playing field to students who wrote the exam in the same subject on different days or in different shifts. The results for the debut edition of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG were declared earlier in the day. "The rank lists will be prepared by universities using normalised NTA scores and not the basis of percentile. NCERT to receive Deemed-to-be-University status for research, innovation

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is set to get the 'Deemed-to-be-University' status with the executive committee of the council granting an approval on Monday, according to a top official. "NCERT will get the deemed-to-be-university status in De Novo category. The proposal has been approved," the official confirmed. The Council's Executive Committee's meeting was chaired by Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. CUET-UG results to be announced by September 15, says UGC Chairman

The results of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG will be announced by September 15, University Grants Commission Chairman Jagadesh Kumar said on Friday. The debut edition of the CUET-UG, a gateway for undergraduate admissions, began in July and concluded on August 30. Sixty per cent attendance was recorded in the exam. "National Testing Agency (NTA) is expected to announce the CUET-UG results by 15th September or if possible, even a couple of days earlier," Kumar said. "All participating universities may keep their web portals ready to start the UG admission process based on the CUET-UG score," he added. According to the initial plan, all phases of the CUET-UG were scheduled to conclude on August 20. Distance learning degrees to be treated on par with conventional ones: UGC

Degrees obtained through distance and online learning from recognised institutions will be treated on a par with those offered through conventional mode, according to the University Grants Commission (UGC). "Degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate level in conformity with UGC notification on Specification of Degrees, 2014 and, post graduate diplomas awarded through Open and Distance learning or Online mode by Higher Educational Institutions, shall be treated as equivalent to the corresponding degrees and post graduate diploma offered through conventional mode," UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said. The decision has been taken as per Regulation 22 of the UGC (Open and Distance learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations.

Universities should accept documents available in DigiLocker: CBSE to UGC

The CBSE has urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to direct all universities and colleges to accept digital copies of the Class-12 migration certificates as well as the marksheets-cum-passing certificates of students available in DigiLocker for admissions, saying the documents are legally valid. The board's clarification came after some universities asked their students to submit a paper-printed copy of the migration certificate. "It has come to the notice that certain universities are asking the students to submit the paper-printed copy of the migration certificate.
