Youth taken for ride by BJP's double-engine govt in UP, alleges Congress

The Congress on Tuesday alleged that the youth have been "taken for a ride" by the BJP's "double engine" government in Uttar Pradesh and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to answer to their "woes" in the state. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh attacked Prime Minister Modi ahead of his rally in Pilibhit and posed questions to him on key issues in the state . The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea by MLA Abbas Ansari, who is lodged in jail, seeking permission to attend fatiha or special prayers on April 10 following the death of his father Mukhtar Ansari. Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari died of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Banda in Uttar Pradesh on March 28. Abbas Ansari, who is in judicial custody in connection with a criminal case, had moved the apex court seeking permission to attend the last rites of his father. On Friday, his counsel told a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Sandeep Mehta that his plea could not be listed before the court on time and now the funeral is over. The lawyer said they be allowed to amend the petition and seek permission to attend fatiha which is scheduled on April 10. He said they would file the amended petition during the day itself. UP waives electricity bills of farmers with private tube wells from April 1

In a major decision, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to waive electricity bills of farmers with private tube wells with retrospective effect from April 1, 2023. The decision taken at the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will benefit around 1.5 crore farmers, an official release said. The government has provided Rs 1,800 crore in the 2024-25 budget for implementation of the scheme. Furthermore, the government has put forth a proposal for a scheme aimed at assisting farmers with outstanding electricity bills predating April 1, 2023, in bill settlement without accruing interest and offering them convenient installment options. Energy Minister A K Sharma said through this decision the government has kept its promise of providing 100 per cent exemption from power tariffs to the farmers owning private tube wells in the state. Religious conversion case: SC gives interim bail to UP's SHUATS varsity VC

The Supreme Court on Monday granted interim bail to Rajendra Bihari Lal, vice chancellor of Uttar Pradesh's Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS), in a case of alleged illegal religious conversion. A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra issued notice to the UP government on his plea challenging the Allahabad High Court. The top court noted that the high court is not hearing the bail plea filed by Lal who has been in custody since December 31 last year. "Issue notice, in the meantime, by way of ad interim order, we grant interim bail to the petitioner," the bench said while adding that the quantum of bail bond shall not exceed Rs 25,000. Senior advocate Siddharth Dave, appearing for Lal, submitted that the petitioner was arrested despite the apex court's order. The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday approved Rs 2,940 crore in funds for industrial bodies YEIDA, UPSIDA and UPEIDA, Cabinet minister Nand Gopal Gupta said. The funds are for expansion of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), the UP State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) and UP Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), he said. Gupta, the industrial development minister, said the newly formed Bundelkhand Industrial Development Authority has been earlier granted Rs 3,000 crore for land acquisition. "In the financial year 2023-24, Rs 8,000 crore was set aside for industrial expansion in the state. Of the remaining Rs 5,000 crore, Rs 1,000 crore has been approved for UPEIDA, Rs 1,500 crore for YEIDA and Rs 440 crore for UPSIDA," Gupta said in a statement. UP to host International Kite Festival ahead of Ram Temple consecration

Ahead of the Ram Temple consecration ceremony scheduled for January 22, the Uttar Pradesh government will host an International Kite Festival here. The Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA) has initiated preparations for the festival, which is likely to take place between January 19 and 21, providing renowned kite flyers from both within the country and around the world with an opportunity to showcase their art, an official release said on Thursday. To organise this festival on a grand scale, inspiration is being taken from various kite festivals being held in the country and abroad, the release said. The ADA has invited applications to appoint a private agency for the conceptualisation, designing, execution, and supervision of the event, it added. The agency that will be engaged for the kite festival will be selected by January 8,the release said. A visitors' area would be designed with seating arrangements for 750 people along with a VVIP lounge to accommodate 50 special invitees

The Uttar Pradesh government has sacked over 50 doctors and served notices to more than 700 medical practitioners found absent from their place of posting, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has said. He, however, asserted that the shortage of government doctors in Uttar Pradesh will be over very soon as the recruitment of specialist doctors has already started. According to official data, against a sanctioned strength of 19,000, Uttar Pradesh has around 12,000 doctors at government facilities across the state. However, there are of complaints that many doctors do not attend duty at the place of posting. UP govt planning to establish waterways on 8 rivers for public transport

The Uttar Pradesh government plans to use eight rivers as inland waterways to improve connectivity and transportation of goods, especially bulk cargo such as foodgrains and fertilisers. Senior state government officials said the Yamuna, Gomti, Assi, Ghaghra, Rapti Betwa, Chambal and the Varuna rivers will be used as waterways to transport goods and people. The move is in line with the BJP-led Centre's Maritime India Vision 2030 that envisages increasing the share of inland water transport to five per cent by 2030. Work on achieving the target has already started. The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government aims to provide the plan with a shot in the arm, the officials said.
