Elections to start from western UP on Feb 10, notification on Jan 14

Voting for the high-stakes Uttar Pradesh assembly elections will be held in seven phases, starting from the western part of the politically crucial state on February 10 and moving eastwards. Punjab (117 seats), Uttarakhand (70 seats) and Goa (40 seats) will have single-day voting on February 14, coinciding with the second phase of polls in UP, according to the schedule announced by the Election Commission. For Manipur, the poll panel has decided to conduct voting in two phases - 38 seats on February 27 and 22 seats on March 3 - coinciding with fifth and sixth phases of UP polls. The final phase of voting will be on March 7 and votes for all phases would be counted on March 10. In Uttar Pradesh, voting will take place in 58 assembly constituencies, covering 11 western districts, out of the 403 seats in the first phase on February 10. The second phase to be held on February 14 will cover 55 seats, the third phase of voting will cover 59 seats on February 20, while the fourth phase .

Over 14 lakh names of people in18-19 age group added in UP electoral roll

Over 14.66 lakh voters in the age group of 18-19 years will be exercising their franchise for the first time in this year's Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, officials said on Wednesday. A total of 52,80,882 voters' names have been added during revision of electoral rolls. The figure comprises 23,92,258 men, 28,86,988 women and 1,636 transgenders, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ajay Shukla said, while releasing the final electoral rolls here. A total of 14,66,470 names were added in the age group of 18-19 which comprises 27.76 per cent of the total names added, he said. At present, the total number of voters in the 18-19 age group in the electoral roll is 19,89,902 10,62,410 men, 9,26,945 women and 547 transgenders. A total of 21,40,278 voters' names of different categories have been deleted during this revision. UP polls: Akhilesh promises 300 units of free electricity if voted to power

Ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday promised 300 units of free electricity to households, if voted to power. The former chief minister also promised free electricity for irrigational purposes. Wishing the people a happy New Year, Yadav tweeted in Hindi, "2022 will be a new year with new light for a new Uttar Pradesh. Three hundred units of electricity for households (domestic consumers) will be given for free and electricity for irrigation will be free." A similar promise was made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in September 2021. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party had promised 300 units of free electricity to all domestic consumers, waiver of outstanding bills of 38 lakh families and 24-hour power supply. AAP leader and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had also announced free electricity to farmers. The AAP has made similar promises in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa where Assembly polls are due this year.
