Democrats keep Senate majority as GOP push falters in Nevada

Democrats kept control of the Senate on Saturday, repelling Republican efforts to retake the chamber and making it harder for them to thwart President Joe Biden's agenda. The fate of the House was still uncertain as the GOP struggled to pull together a slim majority there. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto's victory in Nevada gave Democrats the 50 seats they needed to keep the Senate. Her win reflects the surprising strength of Democrats across the US this election year. Seeking reelection in an economically challenged state that has some of the highest gas prices in the nation, Cortez Masto was considered the Senate's most vulnerable member, adding to the frustration of Republicans who were confident she could be defeated. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed victory on Saturday night, tweeting, Your Senate Democratic Majority! With the results in Nevada now decided, Georgia is the only state where both parties are still competing for a Senate seat. Democratic incumbent Sen

What US midterm election results mean for the future of Ukraine aid

If Republicans win the House, where does that leave Ukraine? It's a question that is top of mind in Washington as the GOP draws closer to winning the majority in the US House. Some fear the end of Democratic control in Congress and the empowerment of America First conservatives could ultimately result in the curtailment of American assistance as Ukraine battles Russia's invasion. Recent comments from Kevin McCarthy, who is in line for speaker if Republicans win the House, exacerbated those fears. He warned that Republicans wouldn't support writing a blank check for Ukraine if they captured the majority. But the hard-line rhetoric isn't the end of the story. While Republican control of the House is likely to make sending tranches of military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine more difficult, support for the country runs deep in both parties. Here is a look at the factors at play: ___ WHAT THE US HAS GIVEN SO FAR Since the Russian invasion began in February, Congress has approved

US president Biden hails Democrats' 'strong night,' acknowledges concerns

President Joe Biden claimed vindication the day after the midterm elections, saying Democrats had a strong night and he planned to change nothing about his approach despite facing the likelihood of divided government in the nation's capital. I'm prepared to work with my Republican colleagues, Biden said during a post-election news conference Wednesday. The American people have made clear they expect Republicans to work with me as well. He brushed off concerns that Republicans, who are on track to take control of the House, will investigate his administration and family in what could swiftly become a bruising stretch of his presidency. I think the American people will look at all that for what it is, almost comedy, he said. In his first public comments since voting ended, Biden was celebratory and defiant as Democrats denied Republicans the sweeping victory they expected. His party still has a potential path to hold control of the Senate, which would preserve his ability to nominate

Ex-US Prez Barack Obama gets a midterm do-over to help boost Democrats

Barack Obama is trying to do something he couldn't during two terms as president: help Democrats succeed in national mid-term elections when they already hold the White House. Of course, he's more popular than he was back then, and now it's President Joe Biden, Obama's former vice president, who faces the prospects of a November rebuke. Obama begins a hopscotch across battleground states on Friday in Georgia, and he will travel on Saturday to Michigan and Wisconsin, followed by stops next week in Nevada and Pennsylvania. The itinerary, which includes rallies with Democratic candidates for federal and state offices, comes as Biden and Democrats try to stave off a strong Republican push to upend Democrats' narrow majorities in the House and Senate and claim key governorships ahead of the 2024 presidential election. With Biden's job approval ratings in the low 40s amid sustained inflation, he's an albatross for Democrats like Senators Raphael Warnock of Georgia and Catherine Cortez Ma

Indian-American groups launch voting campaigns ahead of midterm elections

Ahead of the midterm elections early in November, two Indian American groups on Wednesday launched a voting campaign for their community. Indian Americans account for over one per cent of the country's population and have one of the highest per capita incomes among ethnic groups. While they are concentrated in some of the major states like New York, New Jersey, California, and Texas, their votes might turn out to be decisive in case of close races in the states of Florida, Atlanta, and Pennsylvania. The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS), a US-based non-profit institution for policy research and awareness, launched the #IndoAmericanVotesMatter campaign to increase the participation of American voters in the US 2022 elections. On this launch, Professor Ved Nanda, a distinguished law professor at Denver University and a FIIDS advisor said: As an immigrant minority, it is not only a civic duty, but it is also imperative for Indo-Americans to vote in the elections

Democrats delay primary order decision until after November's midterm poll

The Democratic Party on Saturday delayed a decision on potentially reordering its primary calendar for the 2024 presidential election until after November's midterm elections. The Democratic National Committee's rules committee had planned to decide during meetings in Washington beginning next week whether to recommend that presidential voting should continue to begin with Iowa and New Hampshire. That's amid calls by some party leaders and activists that more diverse states, including the current No. 3 and No. 4, Nevada and South Carolina, should move up. The committee was also mulling adding a fifth early primary contest prior to Super Tuesday when a large number of states traditionally vote. But rules committee co-chairs Jim Roosevelt Jr. and Minyon Moore wrote in a memo to members that after speaking with many of you over the past several weeks about the last few steps of this process, it has become clear that the best way to move forward with the final stage of this process is
