The Uttar Pradesh Police's "Ek Pahal" initiative, launched to encourage Good Samaritans to report emergencies and promote community policing, concluded after receiving 88,447 calls from vigilant citizens across the state, officials said Monday. The campaign, which began on August 12, was inaugurated by Director General of Police Prashant Kumar and ran for 107 days. Officials said the number of calls made by strangers to help victims has increased in the state. During the initiative, 86,341 of the calls were made to seek police assistance, while others reported emergencies to save lives and aid those in need. Notably, UP 112 honoured 20 Good Samaritans whose timely actions helped save lives. One such instance occurred in September when a vigilant citizen in Baghpat witnessed four men assaulting and abducting an individual. The Class XII student who allegedly shot dead the principal of his school in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district is "remorseless" and appears to be a "psychopath", an official connected to the probe claimed on Saturday. The 17-year-old boy shot principal SK Saxena (55) of Dhamora Government High School near the institution's toilet at around 1:30pm on Friday and had then escaped from the spot along with a classmate on the deceased's scooter, police said. The Delhi High Court on Thursday granted a two-week interim bail on medical grounds to expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar who is serving life term for raping a minor in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao in 2017. A bench headed by Justice Prathiba M Singh suspended the sentence for the time being and directed that Sengar be admitted to AIIMS-Delhi for his medical evaluation and must remain in the capital once discharged. "Considering the history of the case as also the medical condition of the applicant, it is directed that the applicant will be released on interim bail for two weeks and he shall seek admission in AIIMS Delhi for a comprehensive medical evaluation," the bench, also comprising Justice Amit Sharma, said. The Supreme Court on Wednesday observed that the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act appeared to be "draconian". The observation by a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan came while it was hearing a plea filed by a man who has challenged a May 2023 Allahabad High Court order dismissing his application seeking to set aside proceedings against him pending before a district court in Kasganj in a case registered under the Act.
