The Centre on Monday informed the Supreme Court that almost 75 per cent of the awarded work of the strategic Chardham Project in Uttarakhand which goes up to China border, was complete. The strategic 900-kilometre project aims to provide an all-weather connectivity to the four holy shrines in Uttarakhand -- Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, informed a bench of Justices C T Ravikumar and Ujjal Bhuyan that the apex court-appointed oversight committee has submitted two reports to the top court. According to Bhati, the apex court had appointed an oversight committee, chaired by former top court judge Justice (retired) A K Sikri. UCC adopted by Uttarakhand will become equality template for all: CM Dhami

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday expressed optimism that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) adopted by his state would pave the way for greater equality in personal laws for everyone in the country, besides promoting unity among local communities and upholding gender equality. Uttarakhand is the first state in the country after Independence to adopt the UCC. Addressing a gathering in Mumbai where he was felicitated, Dhami claimed Uttarakhand was witnessing "land Jihad" which was stopped by his government and about 5,000 acres of encroached land was retrieved. Stating that the UCC legislation aims to bridge societal divides rather than target any specific group, Dhami highlighted its potential to end discriminatory practices against women and ensure equal rights for all citizens. He attributed the initiative to the vision of late leader Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, underscoring the UCC's significance in addressing both legal and moral imperatives. "The UCC bill passed

Uttarakhand tunnel collapse: Access road being built for vertical drilling

Efforts were underway on Sunday to build an access road at the top of the hill above Silkyara tunnel for initiating vertical drilling to reach 41 workers trapped for seven days, with authorities hopeful that a platform to drill the hole might be ready by this afternoon. Larger diameter pipes have also been inserted up to a length of 42 metres through the debris this morning to provide enough food and other essentials to the trapped workers, a control room set up at the site said. Work on building the road began towards Saturday evening with personnel of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on the job, an official at the spot said. Senior officials, including those from the PMO who visited the site on Saturday, are still stationed in Silkyara to oversee the operations aimed at the safe evacuation of the trapped workers at the earliest. Boards with QR code part of 2018 agreement, says Paytm; BKTC on backfoot

Paytm on Tuesday offered an explanation to the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee saying it put up QR code display boards outside the gates of Kedarnath and Badrinath seeking donations from pilgrims as part of a contract with the BKTC in 2018. There was a formal agreement between the BKTC and Paytm in 2018 for putting up such boards outside the gates of the temples to get donations from pilgrims, BKTC media incharge Harish Gaud said. "Ever since then, small boards with Quick Response (QR) code have been put up outside these temples by Paytm. Rs 67 lakh have been received by the BKTC through these QR codes by way of donations," he said. However, Paytm did not take the permission from the competent BKTC authorities before putting up such boards which led to the confusion, he claimed. Paytm has apologised for its mistake to BKTC Chairman Ajendra Ajay, he said.
