A 3.5-km stretch of the Coastal Road's north-bound carriageway here was opened for vehicular traffic at 7 am on Thursday, which will help in reducing the travel time to suburbs from south Mumbai, civic officials said. The stretch extends from Haji Ali to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli. It is part of the nearly 12-km-long Mumbai Coastal Road Project. It will help motorists avoid traffic snarls which they had been facing between Haji Ali and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The carriageway will be accessible to vehicles from Monday to Friday between 7 am and 11 pm, the BMC said in a release on Wednesday evening. The corridor is being opened temporarily for vehicles going to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link from the Coastal Road and will remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays for completion of the remaining work of the project, it said. Soon, your vehicle licence plates will be scanned by cameras at the petrol pumps for PUCC validity with the Delhi government planning to implement a digital solution for the issue. The Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC) has floated a tender and invited bidders to suggest digital solutions to check whether the vehicles coming to the petrol pumps have a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC). The estimated cost of the project is Rs 6 crore. "The bidder must possess the capability to deliver a digital solution aimed at mitigating pollution within the city of Delhi. This involves implementing an application that integrates with existing cameras situated at petrol pumps," said an official. Explaining how the system will work, the official said it will be designed to scan the licence plates of the vehicles upon entry to a petrol pump. He said the selected company will be required to integrate the digital solution with the echallan.parivahan.gov.in .

Vehicle loans outstanding increased by 22 per cent year-on-year to Rs 5.09 lakh crore in May, notwithstanding the Reserve Bank's rate hike spree in 2022-23. As per the latest RBI data, the total vehicle loan outstanding climbed from Rs 3.65 lakh crore in May 2021 to Rs 4.16 lakh crore in May 2022, and further to Rs 5.09 lakh crore as of May 19, 2023. The annual rise in loan outstanding was only 14 per cent in May 2022. The RBI started raising the interest rate in May last year to check inflation in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war and cumulatively increased the repo rate (benchmark interest rate) by 250 basis points in six tranches before pressing the pause button at the beginning of the current fiscal. Around 20 vehicles were damaged in a fire at a car service centre in west Delhi's Mayapuri area on Wednesday, officials said here. There were no reports of any injuries, they added. According to the officials, the fire broke out on the first floor of the showroom. Delhi Fire Service Director Atul Garg said a call about the fire was received at 7.25 am and 19 fire tenders were pressed into action. The fire has been doused off and a cooling process initiated, he said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer said teams of police and the DDMA were also involved in dousing the flames at the Mahindra Service Centre in Mayapuri Phase-I. The fire is under control now, he said. Around 15-20 vehicles got burnt partially or completely, Veer added. The cause of the fire is being ascertained, the officials said.
A fire in a passenger van in eastern Pakistan Saturday killed seven people, including two children, a government official said. The dead included four members of the same family a woman, her daughter and her two granddaughters. Eight passengers received burn injuries of various degrees. Official Nabeel Bhatti said the incident occurred in the Sargodha district of Punjab province after a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder fitted in the vehicle leaked and exploded. The van was immediately engulfed in flames. Five passengers died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. Three of the bodies were charred beyond recognition. Punjab Interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi ordered an investigation into the incident.
Road accidents in Gujarat decreased by 44 per cent in the last 10 years despite a rise in the number of vehicles, a state minister said on Wednesday. Gujarat Minister of State for Transport Harsh Sanghavi, who chaired a meeting of the Gujarat Road Safety Authority in Gandhinagar during the day, attributed this drop in the number of accidents to the efforts taken by the Gujarat Road Safety Authority in reducing the time taken for transporting the victims from the accident sites to nearby hospitals. During the meeting, Sanghavi informed the stakeholders that though the number of vehicles have increased since 2012, Gujarat has reported a decrease of 44 per cent in road accidents between 2012 and 2022, an official release said.
