Russian authorities list opposition leader Navalny's widow as 'extremist'

Russian authorities on Thursday put the widow of deceased Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on a list of terrorists and extremists, continuing a sweeping Kremlin crackdown on the opposition. Earlier this week, a Moscow court ordered the arrest of Yulia Navalnaya, who lives abroad, on charges of alleged involvement in an extremist group. The ruling means that Navalnaya would face arrest if and when she returns to Russia. On Thursday, Russia's Federal Service for Financial Monitoring followed up by adding Navalnaya to its list of terrorists and extremists, a designation that implies restrictions on bank transactions that has been widely used against opposition members. Navalny, the fiercest political foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died in February in an Arctic penal colony while serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges that he had condemned as politically motivated. Authorities said he became ill after a walk but have otherwise given no details on Navalny's ...

World can't wait for US election to take action to repel Putin: Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the world must not wait for November to drive back Russia's offensive against his country. Zelenskyy made the remarks while attending this week's summit of NATO leaders in Washington. He said the world was waiting to see what would happen in November, when voters are expected to decide between incumbent President Joe Biden and Republican opponent Donald Trump. But he said there needed to be action before then to defeat Russian President Vladimir Putin in his war against Ukraine. Zelenskyy has proven to be an adept navigator of international relations in defence of his war-ravaged country, publicly cajoling and sometimes loudly complaining to get the military assistance it needs to defend itself against Russia's invasion. But, as he attends the NATO summit, his most coveted prize -- membership in the military alliance -- remains elusive. The European and North American countries making up NATO are in no hurry to admit Ukraine, especially

Russia India's 'all-weather friend', bond based on mutual respect: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described Russia as India's "all-weather friend" and hailed President Vladimir Putin's leadership in strengthening the bilateral relationship over the past two decades. The Prime Minister's praise of Putin, during an address to the Indian diaspora here, came amid attempts by Western powers to isolate the Russian leader over the war in Ukraine. "On hearing the word Russia, the first word that comes to mind of every Indian is India's all-weather friend (sukh-dukh ka saathi) and a trusted ally, Modi said. No matter how low the temperature dips below minus during Russian winter, India-Russia friendship has always remained in 'plus', it is full of warmth. This relationship is built on the strong foundation of mutual trust and mutual respect, the Prime Minister said. Modi said he had a special appreciation for his friend President Putin for steering India-Russia friendship to greater heights over the last two decades. The Prime Minister said for a

Any plan must respect Ukraine's sovereignty: US on Modi-Putin official meet

India is a strategic partner with whom it engages in a full and frank dialogue, the United States has said as it urged New Delhi to make clear to Russia that any resolution to the conflict in Ukraine must respect the UN charter, Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said this on Monday when he was asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ongoing visit to Russia and his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in a full and frank dialogue. And that includes our concerns about their relationship with Russia," Miller said. "We did just see Modi, like (Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor) Orban, meet with (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy. We thought that was an important step to take. And we would urge India, as we do any country when it engages with Russia, to make clear that any resolution to the conflict in Ukraine needs to be one that respects the UN charter, tha

Modi-Putin summit talks: Ukraine conflict, economic agenda to be in focus

Ways to further shore up India-Russia cooperation in sectors such as energy, trade, manufacturing and fertilisers are expected to be the focus of summit talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin here on Tuesday. The war in Ukraine is also set to figure prominently at the talks. Top sources said the Indian side is likely to reaffirm its position that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way forward to resolve the conflict as there can't be any solution on the battlefield. Prime Minister Modi on Monday began a two-day high-profile visit to Russia to hold the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with President Putin, in his first trip since the start of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Last night, the Russian president hosted a private dinner for the Indian prime minister at the former's residence in Novo-Ogarevo on the outskirts of Moscow. The focus of the prime minister's visit is to advance an economic agenda, especially in areas of energy, trade, ...
