The Supreme Court on Monday slammed authorities for their failure to process municipal solid waste generated in Delhi and termed it "sorry state of affairs". The apex court observed that in the national capital, 3,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste generated remains untreated every day. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed fines totalling Rs 79,098 crore on states and Union territories for non-compliance with municipal solid waste management rules and other environmental violations in 2022-23, the government informed Parliament on Thursday. According to the data provided by Union Minister of State for Environment Ashwini Kumar Choubey in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Tamil Nadu faces the highest fine of Rs 15,419 crore, followed by Maharashtra (Rs 12,000 crore) and Madhya Pradesh (Rs 9,688 crore). The coal ministry on Tuesday said a revenue of Rs 28.79 crore has been generated by disposing of scrap as part of a special campaign. An area of approximately 50,59,012 sq ft has been freed so far via scrap disposal, the coal ministry said in a statement. A total of 1,08,469 physical files have been reviewed so far, and 8,088 old files have been weeded out, it said. Besides, 29,993 e-files have been closed online, after reviewing 80,305 e-files, the ministry said. During the second and third week of the implementation phase of the special campaign, the coal ministry has carried out various activities, identified during the preparatory phase of the campaign, the statement added.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has identified 158 sites across the city for dumping construction and demolition (C&D) waste, as part of its vision to make the city free of such trash, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said on Saturday. Out of these 158 points, 125 of them have been made in and around civic wards, according to a statement issued by the mayor's office. The MCD has five C&D (construction and demolition) waste processing plants at Burari, Rani Khera, Shastri Park, Bakkarwala and Okhla. Their daily capacity is 5,500 tonnes and about 1.5 lag tonne monthly capacity. In one year, these plants can process 18 lakh tonnes of C&D waste, Oberoi said in the statement. The MCD has identified 158 sites across the city (its 12 zones) for dumping construction and demolition waste, Oberoi said.
