HC takes note of rising Delhi temp, says city could become 'barren desert'

Taking note of the recent temperature spike to 52.3 degrees Celsius in the city, the Delhi High Court has observed that the national capital could become a barren desert if the present generation continues an apathetic view on deforestation. Delhi's Mungeshpur area on Wednesday logged a maximum temperature of 52.3 degrees Celsius, the highest ever recorded in the city. "Judicial notice is taken of the fact that as recent as on May 30, the official temperature recorded in Delhi was 52.3 degrees Celsius. It is not far to see the day when this city may be only a barren desert, in case the present generation continues an apathetic view on deforestation," Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said. IMD to use AI to better forecasts, admits predicting weather challenging

As it celebrates 150th year of its establishment, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now set its eyes on fine-tuning its weather forecast models using artificial intelligence and faster supercomputers even though it struggles to predict small-level severe weather events. In an interview with PTI, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the weather office was setting up test beds in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh to better understand the physical processes leading to the formation of thunderstorms and heavy monsoon rains which could eventually help improve forecasts. The IMD will kick start its 150th-anniversary celebrations on Monday with the launch of Panchayat Mausam Seva' that aims to take weather forecasts to every farmer in every village and the National Framework for Climate Services to mainstream climate information in every sector and activity. Delhi's peak winter power demand hits all-time high amid cold spell

The cold spell underway in Delhi pushed the national capital's peak winter power demand to an all-time high of 5,559 MW on Friday, discom officials said. According to real-time data from the State Load Dispatch Centre, Delhi's peak winter power demand clocked 5,559 MW at 11.05 am. The officials said the previous highest peak demand witnessed in Delhi during the winter was 5,526 MW on January 6, 2023. A BSES spokesperson said BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Limited) and BYPL (BSES Yamuna Power Limited) successfully met peak power demand of 2,379 MW and 1,136 MW, respectively, in their areas. Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), which supplies power in North Delhi, met a peak power demand of 1,735 MW, a company spokesperson said.
