Bad weather forces Khattar's chopper to land at Rohtak

A helicopter with Haryana Chief Minister M L Khattar on board had to make an unscheduled landing in Rohtak on Wednesday evening due to bad weather. The chief minister's chopper landed here safely, said Rohtak Superintendent of Police Jashandeep Singh Randhawa. Khattar was on his way to Rewari from Delhi to attend a party function there. Due to sudden deterioration in weather, the chopper had to change its route and land in Rohtak, said Randhawa. High-velocity winds and dust-storm hit many areas in Haryana Wednesday evening.

Vayu to make landfall as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm tomorrow in Gujarat: IMD

'Vayu' is expected to make landfall as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm in the south of Veraval and Porbandar on Thursday, the IMD said on Wednesday.MeT Department Director RK Jenamani said, "Very Severe Cyclonic Storm 'VAYU' is about 280 km from the south of Veraval and 360 km from the south of Porbandar in Gujarat. It will cross Gujarat coast between Dwarka and Veraval as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed 155-165 kmph around the afternoon of June 13.""Cyclones are naturally formed in the sea and they are formed due to the low pressure of the wind. VAYU has intensified and moved ahead towards North. Vayu's intensity is of a severe cyclonic storm. It is moving in the northern direction. Tomorrow it is expected to touch Gujarat's coast. Heavy rain would take place," he added."We are estimating that what impact can the cyclone have. On June 16 and 17, Delhi would see a rainfall. Our meteorological centre in Ahmadabad is very closely in contact with the Gujarat government.

Rainfall in several parts of north India, duststorm sweeps Delhi & Rajasthan

North India experienced some relief from the sweltering heatwave after rainfall in several places, while a duststorm swept Delhi and Rajasthan. Two women died in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district after a tree fell on them on Tuesday night. A thick haze was hanging over the national capital, affecting visibility, due to the duststorm on Wednesday evening. Thunderstorm and light rains are also expected because of a western disturbance and it is likely to bring down temperature in Delhi, a MeT official said. Flight operations were suspended at the Delhi International Airport due to the severe duststorm, airport officials said. They said a "total nine flights have been diverted from the Delhi airport till 7.15 pm today due to severe duststorm". Heatwave warning for Telangana till June 16

The India Meteorological Department Wednesday issued warning that severe heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated pockets over Telangana on Thursday. The IMD also warned that heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail at few places in some districts from June 14 till June 16. It further warned that thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds (30 to 40 kmph) and lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over the state on June 15 and June 16. The IMD advised people not to expose themselves directly to sunlight and take necessary precautions. On Wednesday, Khammam and Ramagundam recorded the highest maximum temperature of 43.6 degree Celsius each in Telangana while Hyderabad recorded 37.7 degree Celsius.

Dust storm hits Delhi brings respite from scorching heat

Dust storm, light rain bring respite from heat in parts of R'than

A dust storm and light rainfall in parts of Rajasthan on Wednesday brought respite for residents from scorching heat as the mercury came down a few notches, a meteorological department official said. Jaipur received 3.2 mm rainfall. The maximum temperature in the state capital was 42.8 degrees Celsius, he said. Churu, however, remained the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 47 degrees Celsius, followed by 46.3 degrees Celsius each in Sri Ganganagar and Bikaner, he said. The maximum temperature in Jaisalmer was 45.4 degrees Celsius and 45.1 degrees Celsius in Barmer. The weatherman has forecast another dust storm with wind speed of 40-50 km/hr at several places in the state during the next 24 hours.

Hot weather conditions persist at most places in Haryana and Punjab

The maximum temperatures Wednesday hovered above normal limits at most places in Haryana and Punjab with Chandigarh recording a high of 42 degrees Celsius, up by three notches, a Meteorological Department report said here. Bhiwani in Haryana recorded the maximum temperature at 42.5 degrees Celsius while Hisar's maximum settled at 41.5 degrees Celsius. Amritsar, Patiala and Ambala received little rains, the Met here said. Narnaul recorded a high of 42 degrees Celsius. Ambala's maximum settled at 40.2 degrees Celsius. Ludhiana in Punjab registered a maximum of 43.5 degrees Celsius, up by five notches against normal. Patiala recorded a high of 40.8 degrees Celsius, up by two degrees while Amritsar's maximum settled at 39.2 degrees Celsius.

Guj: 1.6 lakh people evacuated as Cyclone Vayu inches closer

As cyclone 'Vayu' inches closer to the Gujarat coast and expected to make a landfall Thursday, authorities have so far shifted over 1.60 lakh people from low-lying areas of Saurashtra and Kutch regions. Operations at ports and airports in these regions have been suspended as precautionary measure, officials said. As per the latest weather report, cyclone Vayu, which has turned into a 'very severe cyclonic storm', has changed its course slightly and would now hit Gujarat coast anywhere between Veraval in the south and Dwarka in the west in the afternoon Thursday, officials said. The cyclone is now situated around 280 km south of Veraval, they said. After making the landfall, the cyclone is likely to move along and parallel to Saurashtra and Kutch coast, they said.

Cyclone Vayu: IMD predicts windy day in Maharashtra

The Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that very severe cyclonic storm 'Vayu' is now at 280 km south-southwest of the city and the winds over north Maharashtra coast are likely to be 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph.Deputy Director General, IMD, KS Hosalikar said: "Very severe cyclonic storm 'Vayu' is now at 280 km south-southwest of Mumbai. Winds over North Maharashtra coast are very likely to be 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph today. It will be a windy day.""There is a potential threat from flying objects. Partly cloudy morning in Delhi, respite from heat likely later in the day

It was a partly cloudy Wednesday morning in the national capital, with the minimum temperature settling at 31 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average. Delhiites may get some respite from the oppressive heat as gusty winds and thunderstorm are likely in the later half of the day, a Meteorological Department official said. The maximum temperature would be around 42 degrees Celsius, he said. Relative humidity was 47 per cent at 8.30 am, the official added. Jammu sizzles at 43.6 degrees Celsius

Heat wave conditions in Jammu continued unabated on Tuesday, with the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir recording a high of 43.6 degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said. The minimum temperature in the city was recorded at 31.2 degrees Celsius, it said. Monday recorded the season's highest temperature at 44.4 degree Celsius. May 31 is the second hottest day with a high of 44.1 degrees Celsius.

Delhiites to get slight relief from scorching heat

Delhiites may get slight relief from heat wave conditions as the meteorological department has forecast a fall in mercury over the next few days. The Safdarjung Observatory, reading of which is considered official for the city, recorded a high of 44.5 degrees Celsius, five notches above season's average Tuesday. The minimum temperature was recorded at 30.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal. Humidity levels fluctuated between 52 per cent and 15 per cent in the city. The Palam observatory recorded a maximum of 45.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 33.3 degrees Celsius. Lodhi Road saw a maximum of 45 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature of 30.1 degrees Celsius; Ridge a maximum of 46.9 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 33 degrees Celsius; and Ayanagar a high of 45.7 degrees Celsius and a low of 32 degrees Celsius. Heat wave rages on; 4 elderly pilgrims die of heat in train

Several parts of the country continued to reel under sweltering heat Tuesday with mercury crossing the 45-degree mark, even as four elderly pilgrims travelling on a train from Agra to Coimbatore died due to extreme heat. The pilgrims, hailing from Tamil Nadu, were travelling in non-AC coaches of Kerala Express. They complained of uneasiness and by the time, the train reached Jhansi, three of them died. One of the pilgrims died in a hospital, officials said. Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh has been experiencing severe heat wave in the recent weeks. It recorded a high of 48 degrees Celsius Tuesday. Andhra Pradesh to experience heat wave for 3 days: AWARE

: Andhra Pradesh would witness extreme heat wave conditions for the next three days due to the delayed arrival of the southwest monsoon, coupled with cyclone 'Vayu' in the Arabian Sea, a weather forecasting centre said Tuesday. Temperature in the next three days (June 12 to 14) might touch 43-45 degree Celsius in several districts of central and south coastal Andhra, the Andhra Pradesh Weather Forecasting and Early Warning Research Centre (AWARE) said. West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, SPS Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa and Vizianagaram districts could bear the brunt of the heat wave. Moisture has transposed from high pressure to low pressure area because of Vayu cyclone in the Arabian Sea. Due to this, central and south coastal districts in the state would experience high temperature in the next three days, AWARE said in a press release.
