Former President Donald Trump plans to spend the hours ahead of Tuesday night's vice-presidential debate campaigning in Wisconsin, stopping in a critical Democratic county that is crucial to Democrat Kamala Harris ' hopes for winning the key battleground state. Trump is scheduled to appear at a manufacturing facility in Waunakee, a suburb of Wisconsin's capital city of Madison in the Democratic stronghold of Dane County. Trump has never campaigned in Dane County before and didn't visit as president. Later on Tuesday, Trump is expected to hold an event at a museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin's largest city and home to the largest number of Democratic voters and second-largest number of Republicans. His appearance there will also give him reach into the city's conservative suburbs, a part of Wisconsin where his support has softened but where he must do well to win. Trump is expected to focus his comments on the economy. On Saturday, he held a rally in western Wisconsin where he blamed ...
Private money to fund elections will be banned in Wisconsin after voters approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday put forward by Republicans in reaction to grants received in 2020 that were funded by donations from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Voters also approved a second question put on the ballot by the Republican-controlled Legislature that amends the constitution to say that only election officials can administer elections. That's already state law, but putting it in the constitution makes it more difficult to repeal or change. Democrats opposed both measures, which they argued would make it more difficult to conduct elections in the presidential battleground state. Both constitutional amendments on the ballot were in reaction to grant money that came to Wisconsin in 2020 from the Center for Tech and Civic Life, a liberal group that fights for voter access. That year it received a $300 million donation from Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan to help election ...
The ruling once again illustrates the difficulty that Trump's Republican rivals have had in addressing the former president's legal problems head-on
Wisconsin's bipartisan elections commission, for a second time, has unanimously rejected a complaint against fake presidential electors who attempted to cast the state's ballots for Donald Trump in 2020. The Wisconsin Elections Commission first rejected the complaint in March 2022. But a judge in May ordered the commission to rehear the complaint, this time without one of its members who served as one of the fake electors for the former president. The commission released its unanimous 5-0 decision to reject the complaint Wednesday without explaining why. The elections commission's discussion of the complaint, as well as its vote on Tuesday, was conducted in closed meetings. The complaint asked the elections commission to investigate the fake electors' actions and declare that they broke the law. Last year, when it rejected the complaint the first time, the commission attached a letter from the Wisconsin Department of Justice that said that Republicans who attempted to cast the stat
Two people were killed and two others injured Saturday in a midair collision at an airport in Wisconsin. A Rotorway 162F helicopter and an ELA Eclipse 10 gyrocopter collided shortly after noon local time at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, authorities said. The aircraft belonged to individuals attending the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual fly-in convention in Oshkosh but were not involved in the air show, a statement from the organization said. The association, citing the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, said two people were killed and two injured. The injured were taken to a local hospital and were in stable condition. The association said further information would be released as additional details are confirmed. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. Separately, a plane earlier Saturday crashed into Lake Winnebago near Oshkosh, killing two people, according to the sheriff's office. The NTSB is also investigating that case, which ...
Microsoft has agreed to buy a $50 million parcel of land in southeastern Wisconsin meant for Foxconn after the world's largest electronics manufacturer failed to fulfil grandiose promises to build a massive facility that would employ thousands of workers. Microsoft plans to build a $1 billion data centre on the 315-acre parcel in Mount Pleasant, a village of about 27,000 people in Racine County about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Milwaukee. It's unclear how many people the centre might employ; Microsoft officials had no immediate comment when reached via email Wednesday. The village already is home to a Foxconn Technology Group manufacturing facility. The Taiwan-based company is best known for making Apple iPhones. The company announced plans in 2017 to build a $10 billion facility in Mount Pleasant that would employ 13,000 people. Wisconsin's governor at the time, Republican Scott Walker, and then-President Donald Trump praised the decision, with Trump boasting the plant would
Patti LaBelle was abruptly rushed off stage just a couple of songs into her Christmas concert in Milwaukee after a bomb threat forced authorities to evacuate the theatre. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that video from the Riverside Theatre on Saturday night shows what appears to be two security officers interrupting the 78-year-old LaBelle as she chats with an audience member. They rush her off stage. Shortly after, someone announced that the nearly full 2,500-seat theater had to be evacuated because of a bomb threat. Catherine Brunson, who documented the evacuation on Facebook Live, told the newspaper that the evacuation happened two songs into LaBelle's concert around 9:24 p.m. We came out and police had the block taped off. ... A whole lot of people were pretty upset. ... It's scary, Brunson said. Scott Pierce, who also attended the concert, said everyone exited the theatre calmly, but it's just sad that someone does this. Milwaukee Police Capt. Warren Allen Jr. said
