As many as 1,606 government-run primary schools in Gujarat were functioning with just one teacher, the state government informed the legislative assembly on Monday.
In a debate during the Question Hour of the ongoing budget session, state Education Minister Kuber Dindor admitted that the number of schools facing a shortage of teachers has increased in the last two years mainly because of the transfer of educators to places of their choice.
While Dindor assured the House that vacant posts in the state-run primary schools would be filled "at the earliest", Congress MLAs took a strong exception and asked the BJP government to specify the timeframe for filling the posts.
Responding to a question by Congress MLA Tushar Chaudhary, the minister said 1,606 government primary schools in Gujarat were functioning with just one teacher as of December 2023.
The state has more than 32,000 government primary schools.

The Assam government on Monday presented a Rs 2.9 lakh crore budget for the 2024-2025 financial year with a deficit of Rs 774.47 crore and proposed no new tax.
Presenting the annual financial statement for the next fiscal, Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog also said the government will support the education of 10 lakh girls up to post graduation level in order to eliminate child marriage from society.
"The Budget Estimates of 2024-25 show a receipt of Rs 1,43,605.56 crore under the Consolidated Fund of the state. After adding the receipt of Rs 1,44,550.08 crore under Public Account and Rs 2,000 crore under Contingency Fund, the aggregate Receipts amount to Rs 2,90,155.65 crore," she added.
As against this, the total expenditure from the Consolidated Fund in 2024-25 is estimated atRs 1,43,890.62 crore, Neog said.
She further said that taking into account, the expenditure of Rs 1,42,670.09 crore under the Public Account and Rs 2,000 crore under the Contingency Fund, the aggregate ..

Patel Engineering Ltd (PEL) has reported a multi-fold jump in its consolidated net profit to Rs 70.2 crore during the quarter ended December 2023, supported by higher income.
It had clocked a net profit of Rs 19.4 crore during the October-December period of preceding 2022-23 financial year, the company said in an exchange filing.
The company's total income rose to Rs 1,076.1 crore from Rs 980.6 crore a year ago.
Expenses stood at Rs 1,030.9 in the reporting quarter as against Rs 940.5 crore in the third quarter of last fiscal.
In a separate statement, the company's CMD Rupen Patel said, "Our adaptability and resilience are evident in our increased turnover of Rs 3,200 crore in the nine-month period, marking a 19.17 per cent growth as against the corresponding period in the last year."
The company is expected to sustain an upward trajectory through various projects and joint ventures, he said.

Researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that can predict the onset of psychosis in people using brain scans.
They said that the model, trained on brain scans from people globally, could be helpful in clinical settings, as earlier intervention typically leads to better outcomes with less negative impact on people's lives, even as most experiencing psychosis recover fully.
Psychosis is a mental state characterised by being out of touch with reality and symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations or radical changes in behaviour and thinking. The condition has no single cause, but can be triggered by trauma, drug or alcohol use, or a genetic predisposition.
