Construction engineering company Ashoka Buildcon plans to invest Rs 9,000 crore in setting up a green hydrogen plant in Bihar, its COO-Renewable Energy Mayank Sharma said Friday.
The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government, committing to investing in the plant, during the Bihar Business Connect 2024.
The Maharashtra-based firm is in highway construction, power distribution and solar projects.
Sharma said the company will set up a 1,250 MW solar project and use the clean electricity to produce green hydrogen by splitting water.
"The first phase of the plant is being planned at Begusarai (in Bihar)," he said.
Green hydrogen is the cleanest known source of energy, which produces just water from being burnt.
Sharma said the first phase of the project will take 1.5-2 years to commission from the date of receiving all clearances.
The second phase will follow thereafter.

The Bretton Woods institution's Board of Executive Directors met in Washington, USA on Thursday and approved the loan.
"The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors yesterday approved the USD 800 million Amaravati Integrated Urban Development Program aimed at establishing the city as a well-managed, climate-resilient growth center in Andhra Pradesh that generates jobs and improves the lives of its current and future residents, especially the most vulnerable," a World Bank press release said.
According to the World Bank, the Government of India requested the USD 800 mn loan to develop Amaravati as an economic hub and the state capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The Supreme Court on Friday said the plea seeking a policy for verification of electronic voting machines will be heard by a bench headed by Justice Dipankar Datta in January next year.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said the fresh plea of former Haryana minister and five-time MLA Karan Singh Dalal and one Lakhan Kumar Singla on the issue will be heard by a bench headed by Justice Datta in the week commencing January 20, 2025.
A bench comprising Justice Khanna and Justice Datta had delivered a verdict earlier in April rejecting the demand for bringing back the old paper ballots.
At outset, senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the Election Commission, sought dismissal of the plea, saying that similar petitions for same reliefs were rejected earlier.

Sources said the police beat Amini with a baton and banged her head against a vehicle. At her funeral on September 17 in Saqez, women protested by ripping off their hijabs.
