A section of a historic bridge over the Ganga, linking Kanpur and Unnao, collapsed into the river early Tuesday, according to locals. The Supreme Court rejected a petition seeking the return to ballot paper voting in Indian elections. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and P B Varale remarked, “When you win the election, EVMs are not tampered with. When you lose, EVMs are tampered with.” The plea also requested several other measures, including a directive for the Election Commission to disqualify candidates for at least five years if found guilty of offering money, liquor, or other inducements to voters during elections.
